XOOPS and PHP8

XOOPS and PHP8
Most of you probably have heard already that on November 26th, 2020, PHP team will release a highly anticipated new version: PHP 8

There are already tons of articles describing the new features of this release, as well as the major speed improvements.

Of course, as usual, XOOPS Core Team under the leadership of Richard Griffith (aka Geekwright), is working hard on updating the Core to make sure that it works on PHP 8, once it is released.

Over the weekend Richard made first official changes to the XOOPS Core to make it compatible with PHP 8, so you can now install it on PHP 8 and test it!

The XOOPS PHP 8 JOURNEY starts TODAY!

Download and Fork it from GitHub: https://github.com/XOOPS/XoopsCore25

Over the next weeks and months, till November 26th, we'll be testing and improving our key modules to make sure that they are working with PHP 8 and MySQL 8

Once testing of individual module is successfully completed, we'll be adding a little image to its repository on Github Xoops Modules location to indicate that the module is certified for PHP 8 and MySQL 8:

Resized Image

Please help us with testing and making the modules ready for PHP 8!

We also need help with translations of the modules! Thanks to the great new module wgTransifex, developed by Goffy, it is now very easy to translate the modules!

XOOPS API

XOOPS API

The XOOPS CMS is built on the basis of a framework which provides a set of specifications for:

  • The routines ,
  • The data structures ,
  • The object classes ,
  • The variables ,
  • The namespaces .

The site monxoops.fr promised it, there will be available resources for developers.

To allow you to familiarize yourself with the kernel, here is a first element with the XOOPS API (Application Programming Interface) made available to the developer community. These documents were generated using Doxygen , a generator of software documentation from source codes and supported by Graphviz , a graph viewer. Of course, this documentation is not complete since it was generated on the fly from the information contained in the sources of XOOPS.

API resource available on the dedicated subdomain api.monxoops.fr

Good lecture and good discovery !

Docker: XOOPS 2.5.10 on PHP 7.3 RC5 and MySQL 8.0.13

If you want to test the upcoming XOOPS version 2.5.10 on PHP 7.3 RC5 and MySQL 8.0.13 using Docker, the files are here:
https://github.com/geekwright/xoops_mysql8

Make sure you read the Readme.md file

Richard (aka Geekwright) is testing and is fixing potential issues. So far he has found only a few issues running under MySQL 8.0. The expanded reserved word list is one. There are also issues with using PHP with the new default authentication plugin in MySQL 8.0, caching_sha2_password.
Docker version above sets default-authentication-plugin=mysql_native_password.

The 'rank' column in users table is a reserve word, and needs to be `quoted`

Richard changed criteria class to use quotes on criteria column names to prevent reserved word issues.

I have installed the Docker version and it worked perfectly. I'll need to test some modules...

Background on problems.

XOOPS Website in transition

Mamba  29-Nov-2016 06:48  7799 reads  11
In the next few weeks the XOOPS Website will be very busy, with a lot of work happening in the front of you!

Instead of making a secret out of it, and then creating a huge splash out of it, we've decided to just go ahead and make changes to the Website as we go.

What is happening:

1) We are moving to PHP 7. Originally we were on 5.4, and this weekend we moved to PHP 5.6, as as soon as our host offers PHP 7, we'll be ready.

2) We've also moved the Website to the latest XOOPS Core, so we can test it here before we officially release it.

3) We are also updating all modules that are being used here, which will help us, of course with your help, to discover any bugs

We have updated the NewBB Forums to the latest version, as well as News. We'll be converting soon the News to Publisher, as strategically that's what we want to invest our time in.

And we'll be adding some new cool modules, like the one upcoming wgTimelines developed by Goffy from Germany. We'll transition our "XOOPS Innovators" and "XOOPSer of the Month" awards there. The work on the converting the "XOOPS Innovators" to the wgTimelines has already started - you can check it out herehttps://xoops.org/modules/wgtimelines/

What else?

We have moved modules developed by Wishcraft to one location on GitHub (read more here), so you can check them out, fork, and contribute back.

We have also created one GitHub location for various XOOPS D3 modules. If you're curious what the D3 modules are, please read more here

Of course, we hope that you'll help us on this journey as we're moving closer to the next release of XOOPS

And in case you were wondering, yes, we're looking for a new responsive theme for this updated Website! So if you would like to design a new theme for us, please let us know...

Articles about XOOPS in Tech Republic

Anonymous  06-Aug-2016 02:20  3945 reads  4
We knew it already for years, but it's always nice to see that the technology media also considers XOOPS as powerful and limitless as Drupal and Joomla, as it was stated recently in an article in Tech Republic !
Here is the article

This was my response in the comments:
Quote:
"You're absolutely right with your assessment about the need for Simplicity, but I guess, you've missed the XOOPS extension called "Common Utilities" (http://rmcommon.com/en/) :)

So I invite you to download the latest version of XOOPS 2.5.8 (https://xoops.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6762), the Common Utilities extension, incl. some of the modules created with this new architecture (http://rmcommon.com/en/modules/)
and take it for a spin and let us know what you think.

The Common Utilities will be part of the upcoming "next generation" version of XOOPS - see more on our XOOPS Roadmap: https://github.com/XOOPS/XoopsCore/issues/252 "

As a follow-up to the article in Tech Republic, the author conducted an interview with us, and it is now posted there as "One on one on one with XOOPS"

So as you can see from the interview, there are a lot of cool things coming for XOOPS, but we need your help, so please get involved: https://xoops.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=6765
