Been there...done that!
No reason to be fooled again. Just come up with a list of 10 possible domains. Seach for availability. Then immediately buy the one you like best at that time.

Can't wait one day or even in some cases 1 hour or some sh&*head will steal it from you.

I tested Network Solution one day. I searched for 6 different domain "I never intended too buy". Within 3 days 4 of the 6 were gone.

To be honest with you, I think my company gets their hosting for about $12 a month or so. Thanks for the heads up on the cheaper monthly hosting though.

Herko:

Good advice...

So you give you some background, the company I work for has:
1. No web architecture to speak of. Just a semi-good static html site. Confusing and hard to navigate.
2. Would XOOPS or other open source CMS's work? I'd say yes as a made a test site for them. For the most part, got no response other than I misspelled a word or two. The site was closed for maintenance and only a few people had access...the boss never visited the site.
3. Level of work to maintain the site? Good question!!!! Being the resident expert on XOOPS, guess I'd be doing most of the maintenance until I could get the IT person/webmaster up to speed.
4. Cost is just one factor? Yes you are right but when the budget is just a $20 a month hosting plan, I'd say XOOPS would fit nicely into that budget.

My thoughts: No one in the company cares. They have problems that XOOPS would solve as I proved with the test site. While it's no skin off my teeth, it would be nice if the company made some improvements and maybe attracted more business. My motto for the company is:
"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink"

Your thoughts on the following statement from an IT person.

I have to say though I'm not hot on open source stuff. *** (the company I work for) is usually looking to keep industry standard stuff and is willing to pay the extra bucks to get it.

I've been trying to get my company to save money by using open source software...XOOPS included. I have made a number of suggestions and get stonewalled. The above statement is a direct quote from my employer's IT person.

If you were a small business with employees willing to help with cutting cost, would you rather pay $2000 for a CMS and $500 per copy of a graphics program or use open source?

Thanks "frankblack" and "Peekay" for your inputs. Guess I'll have to get the IT department of my employer to push the boss to use a mixture of browsers while we are on the road to a XOOPS website.

If anyone else has experience in Mac compatibility issue with XOOPS feel free to chime in. Information is power and any feedback I give to the boss/IT department would help push this project through the narrow pipe it already has.

Hi:
I'm trying to convince my company to go with XOOPS for their website. I already have a test site up and running. Everyone at work uses Windows XP except the Boss. He uses a Mac/Apple computer. My question is...
1. Does using a Mac have any bad affects on the general overall usage of a XOOPS website?????
2. My biggest concern is with the use of one module. This module is "wf downloads". The boss NEEDS to submit documents and download documents. I have "wf downloads" working very well while in the Windows XP environment. (Great Module BTW) Does any one have any experience submitting and downloading files using the "wf downloads" module whist using a Mac/Apple?

I doubt this will help but I had occassional problems with registrations.

The following is what I found:

Sorry if this is of no help but it's worth a try!

Problems with Registering "Some" New Users?

I have 2 full on XOOPS sites and have had a problem with "some" guests not being able to register. My wife finally figured out the problem. So here is the set-up.

1. Guests using hotmail or yahoo mail as their primary e-mail would never get a "activation" e-mail. There are surely other e-mail systems that also have this problem but I don't know.

2. Guest trying to register with an IP based e-mail for the registration process did not have problems getting through the full registration process.

3. I was using a "gmail" e-mail address for the "Admin Mail Address" found in the XOOPS Admin Control Panel at Preferences Main »» General Settings

Here is what my problem was:

1. Hotmail and Yahoo Mail thought the automated "activation e-mail" that XOOPS sends out was sp*m or some kind of IP spoofing. These e-mails never reach their intended destination In-Box as they were blocked right at the Hotmail/Yahoo server.

The Fix:

I changed the site "Admin Mail Address" to an email that matched my website IP. For example:

Website:http://thesite.cam
Old "Admin Mail Address": tim@gmail.cam
New "Admin Mail Address": tim@thesite.cam

I'm sure there are others out there having this problem and I'm sure somewhere in the XOOPS documentation, this fix is addressed but I could not find it.

Hopefully someone out there will find this fix useful.

My suggestion is to put a "custom block" on your index/home page. In this custom block, explain what your site is all about and give instructions on how to find information they may find helpful. Some people are just lazy and others are just uneducated on the ways of surfing the net. Educate the uneducated with some guidance. The lazy one? Well, they either click their mouse a few extra times or they miss out on information they wanted.

By doing this, your visitors will more fully understand your site and search engines may respond a little better when indexing the content.

I've tried both XOOPS and Joomla. I wasn't really all that fair with Joomla as it just didn't have the features I needed for my community websites. I'll say XOOPS is great for this purpose. I also cut my teeth on XOOPS so I sorta know what I'm doing and really didn't want to learn a whole new piece of software.

My vote goes to XOOPS but there is a steep learning curve for modifying things and getting the look and feel you want. I found Joomla a little easier to mess with the code. I know hardly any php coding but both are rather forgiving if you are careful when making changes in php.

I suggest you research both XOOPS and Joomla through their BB Support. Then when you think you know just enough to be dangerous, keep on reading the Bulletin Boards for a few more days. Then make a decision...Again I vote XOOPS!
