Ok, another way in to reset permissions etc is like this:
login to your site,
go to site administration page,
enter this address into your browser
http://yoursite.com/modules/system/admin.php?fct=groups

This should return the groups settings page

Then you have to give the webmaster all system admin rights. Make sure you tick everything.

update the settings. You should be able to see your blocks again.

Have a look at this link in the wiki Kick start primer

If the blocks are not showing on your HOME PAGE check the setting in groups are allowing the blocks to be seen (see the link above) if the blocks are missing in the ADMIN PAGE you need to give us a bit more information as to what blocks they were; forum? news? or what.

When I first used XOOPS it took me a while to get used to the settings of blocks, who could see them and where. In the end you find it's areally useful and flexible system that allows many personal variations.

Hope this helps.

a killer addition would be the ability to post via email, tied in with the post full forum posts by email

The word Yahoo (usually causes a gurgling sound in the back of the throat for many.) Anyway, one must acknowledge that they have one of the most successful community operations on the net, inspite of their atrocious subliminal advertising and marketing policy.

Having already carried out a survey to establish some of the popular features of the Yahoo board, it was clearly indicated that the 'email digest' 'remote email post to board' and 'expand messages' where the top most useful features. I spent some time posting on the phpbb forum to encourage the development of the email digest feature. This facility has now been written and available as a phpbb mod. One of the drawback of the phpbb digest is that it is delivered by using crontab. This is not suitable for many users.

Email digest only occurs on a few board systems, all of which are paid software, except yahoo and the recent mod to phpbb.

Rather than 're-inventing the wheel' may I suggest scrutinising the features of other boards, not only for the facilities but also the technical methodology. Anything that enhances quick, concise organised commuication should lead the way forward with minor gimmicks left as a back option.

My own research clearly indicates email digest, remote posting to board and expand messages as key features in this quest.

Regards, Richard

John,

Thanks for your helpful reply. What you said all makes sense, I just wanted to check, seeing there is nothing documented about this.

I refer to a full installation and not the patch, as I seem to have incurred some serious problems in the admin section of my existing setup since losing the 'admin' block.

I can't find any specific documentation, so I'm assuming that upgrading from xoops-2.0.5rc-to-2.0.5.1 is simply a matter of uploading the new files over the existing files and going through the install procedure. Is that correct??

I have some extra modules installed on the original version. Do they need to be reconnected??

I also assume all content and template data in the DB will remain in tact. Is that correct?

I also assume the existing tables comply with the new version. Is thst correct?

I also assume there are NO redundant tables that need to be dropped. Is that correct?

Forgive me if these questions are already covered someplace else, but I can't find it on a search for 'upgrade'

Thanks you for your help,

Richard

It would really be useful to be able to see context snippets when returning results for site search.

The XOOPS search has some nice features like demarking areas where the search terms occur, but it would be Really helpful to see an option of displaying excerpts to give context of the results. Opening pages just to see, then going back to results page... and ooh the page has expired... etc. This is tiresome.

Is there an alternative search module that gives the option of context snippets?

If not has anyone seen the Fluid dynamics search engine. It will work on multiple realms with static and database driven content. The results fully customisable.

NO complaints ... Only suggestions!

cant reach anything to check whats' happened.

Any ideas appreciated. Thank-you Richard

Hi Max

Just signed up and had a good look around AuthorZone. Sure this is a a whole bag more than article or category management. I have another reason for sign-up as I,m a writer myself. I would personally like to see this ported or moduled, as I have an immediate application requirement for it. What I particularly like about AuthorZone is how it has features that encourage a sense of community as well as the capacity for organisation .

Good luck
