The World of Letterboxing Community Website has recently changed it's online presence, due to an unfortunate incident.

Originally using PHP-Nuke, the website was attacked and hacked using an SQL injection attack. This attack exploited a known bug in PHP-Nuke 7.2 (Which is freely available) and which was corrected in PHP-Nuke 7.3 (Which is not freely available) To receive the bug fix that closed a massive security hole, you had to join his "Club" by paying ten dollars and then you would receive the newest version. Or, wait for 30 days (Or longer till the next version came out) before the previous version was released. To me, that is extortion. Needless to say, running a non-profit website, I can't afford to pay money for what is supposed to be free, if that were true, then I'd have purchased commercial CMS software from the beginning.

Anyways, to make a short story long, after losing the entire site to hackers on the morning of April 15th, 2004, I immediately went in search of a replacement and within the hour had settled on XOOPS. Downloading the software and installing it and getting the site, at least back to the point of allowing people back in and open for user registration took less than 2 hours.

I'm thrilled to say that we are extremely happy with XOOPS and, although we have a steep learning curve ahead, we feel that we'll not suffer the same fate as awaited us the other morning!
