for those of you who don't know what Skype is: its a peer-to-peer voice over IP application. For now it's free as it is in beta stage, but it's growing fast. More info at http://www.skype.com .

This is pretty off-topic, so I'll answer quickly and then go away

I tried it shortly on two machines, and was not impressed.
A 1.2GHz machine could barely maintain a problem free voice communication to a 2.4GHz machine on the same ethernet hub (with low networking trafic). Typical telephones require 8kbyte/s of data or less transmitted, but SkyPe went way beyond 90kbytes/s, and had a worse sound quality.
I was also not very impressed with the GUI.

I may take a look at it again, once it's more mature.

Best regards,

Daigoro, try mirandacomm audio communication (v1.0.0.1, beta, opensource)... you can choose any audio codec...

How much bandwidth does Skype use while I'm in a call?
Skype automatically selects the best codec depending on the connection between yourself and the person you are calling. On average, Skype uses between 3-16 Kilobytes/sec - depending on bandwidth available for other party, network conditions in between, callers CPUs, etc.

How much bandwidth does Skype use when there are no active calls?
On average Skype uses 0-0.5 Kilobytes/sec while idle. This is used mainly for buddy presence updates. The exact bandwidth depends on many factors.

Well, here when I use Skype, it generates a download and upload around 5 kb/sec, sometimes it jumps to 10, but then lowers again. (Traffic controlled by AnalogX) When Skype on and no talking it generates every minute around 1kb/sec, prolly to check the friend list.

The Skype layout is simple, and works perfect. Why should you need flashie things? It only takes up CPU usage, and then people like you would complain again

And I'm suprised you even dair to complain when you have hub. Hub are stupids things and when they get incoming signal they send to ALL clients that are connected to it. Some firewalls get nuts because of this behavior. You might wanne think about a switch or router...
