Re: XOOPS and internationalization - How can I help?

Hi! I contacted Onokazu (the xoops.org owner) to restore the good and old XOOPS Brasil domain, BR.XOOPS.ORG, 'deleted' by the old XOOPS Foundation:

Contact phppp about this issue and if possible have him redirect www.xoops.net.br over
to your site.

We really don't have to get into the whole discussion about languages.

The reality is that it's up to individuals who want to translate XOOPS into their language.

As XOOPS, we don't want to tell people that they should or should not have a local regional translation.

So if there is a group of Brazilian XOOPS users/developers who believe that it is justified to have a Brazilian version, then more power to them. We have the infrastructure in place on SourceForge to support them.

In the end, it will be up to them to spend the time on translation and maintaining the translation.

It seems like there is no one right or wrong answer. For example:

Firefox has a Brazilian version.
Wikipedia members voted down a Brazilian version of Wikipedia

And we at XOOPS won't be the first ones to solve it once and for all

Yes, a very good example is the Wikipedia (the same for both). The conflicts can be solved with Patches. I believe that using the same folder will help the Portuguese and Africans communities (is necessary).

Again: is very hard and unnecessary to translate all modules to all dialects.

Ok: Portuguese is a language. "Brazilian Portuguese" and "Portuguese from Portugal" are DIALECTS, not languages. The same to "US English" and "European English".

Good example: In Blogger, anyone can see the options "Portuguese" (neutral), "Brazilian Portuguese", and "Portuguese from Portugal" Because Blogger can support many dialects.

Will be great in the "perfect world" a XOOPS Language folder for each country or city, but is impossible. Too much work for too many modules.

Scripts like WordPress can support dialects because they are just small scripts (used as XOOPS module, for example) supported by a by BIG community. XOOPS Community is BIG, but not to translate all modules to all dialects.

What I mean is: XOOPS is not a "Stand Alone Web Application", is modular. Is "ok" to translate the XOOPS Core to dialects but is impossible and UNNECESSARY to translate ALL XOOPS modules to dialects. This is the point.

Is really necessary to translate internal modules like the System or AltSys to EN-UK? The same question is valid to Portuguese BR and Portuguese PT.

Ah, and actually, the XOOPS Portugal support is inactive.

My 20 Euros.

@ Mamba: Really great news!

@ Barroca: Who is the REAL author?

Re: utf-8 and portuguese

@ Mamba: Portuguese is a LANGUAGE like English. Portuguese from Portugal is a dialect like English from UK. Same rules.

@ Barroca: and the credits? any problem?

In XOOPS Languages SVN we have separate directories for Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese.

Within each of those languages, you can have directories for both versions: UTF-8, and ISO-8859-1. The user can then download the version they want to use.

If you submit your language translations for downloads, you can submit both versions, or just only one, whichever you have available.

In the future we'll provide only UTF-8 based files, but I don't know exactly when this will happen.

But Brazilian Portuguese is not a language, is just a dialect like "US English". And about the Credits of XOOPS 2 translation to Portuguese, replaced with help of the old XOOPS Foundation? "Barroca" is the translator? Where is the answer?

Re: utf-8 and portuguese

Two possibilities:

1) Take advantage of the obvious differences between the two dialects to create different folders and put your credits inside (but XOOPS has no support for dialects, and this is a fact and the reason of lack of "englishus" and "englishuk" folders).

2) Or avoid conflicts with Patches.

You're the original translator of XOOPS2 to Portuguese? Or you're just renaming the folders to a new dialect standard?

The pig-spirit will think something like this: Quote:
Yes! If the xoops.org accepts dialects folders like pt_utf8, I also I want to create my "englishxx" just to put my links inside. And no one can complain! Yes!

Re: utf-8 and portuguese

englishuk = en-uk
englishus = en-us
pt_utf8 = pt-br
portuguesept = pt-pt
etc

NEW XOOPS LANGUAGE FOLDERS
englishuk & englishus

Oh, great idea englishus folders and englishuk folders:

Apart from differences in vocabulary, grammar and pronuciation, I have noted a few differences in usage between englishuk and englishus. I found these comparing the englishuk and englishus versions of a Grammar Book. usually both are correct in each varietu of English, but one is more usual in englishuk, while the other is more common in englishus.

englishuk : I'll phone her
englishus : I'll call her

englishuk : I feel a bit hungry
englishus : I feel a little hungry

englishuk : We decided to go by car
englishus : We decided to drive

englishuk : horrible
englishus : awful

englishuk : cross the road
englishus : cross the street

englishuk : look for somewhere else to stay
englishus : look for another place to live

englishuk : I am going on holiday
englishus : I am leaving on vacation

englishuk : When you have finished with it...
englishus : When you are finished with it... (this is wrong in englishuk)

englishuk : to advise someone
englishus : to give someone advice

englishuk : When will you know your exam results ?
englishus : When will you find out how you did on the exam ?

englishuk : this evening
englishus : tonight

PS1: I'm a noob with English and I want to create new folders to put my name and my links inside. Just It. Great idea, no? Ok, maybe not English because I don't need the complains from xoops.org, so... what about another language? what about Portuguese? YES! Great IDEA!

I agree! Was irony,
People are cloning and renaming modules to put links inside.

what features do you expect from the glossaries module?

a small and fast module with a descriptive name, based or not in the excellent Salazar's WordBook.

Nowadays, a new name in credit list and a small backlink for google in main page of this brand new module.

Maybe a new feature too? Or not?
