Thanks jdseymour. That worked like a charm. For anyone else who comes across this problem I found the numbered URL didn't work but the name following tilde did:

http://67.14.54.54:2082 Didn't work.

http://67.14.54.54/~login_name/ Did work.

Note I changed the ip address to an arbitrary one in this example for security reasons.

How to test a xoops intallation without changing nameservers?

I just finished having three sites consolidated into one and migrating them to a new host, setting two of them up as add on domains. I had just successfully updated the nameservers with the new host info and all seemed well. Then my wife decided to do a little cleaning. To make a long story short, she deleted the public_html directory and everything under it with cPanel's File Manager and then emptied the trash. Most helpful.

First question: Is this grounds for divorce?

I quickly reversed the nameservers and have recopied the missing directories to the new site. I can't test to see if the database is correctly connected as the info in mainfile.php points to the URL which then loads the site at our OLD host.

Any ideas how to test a XOOPS intallation without using the URL? I'm reluctant to change the nameservers without being sure as we've had more than enough interruptions over the past few days. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks for replying Solo71. Have a look at the menu on this page: Hima Ari Online. You'll see that some items are listed in two columns rather than the default of one. For some reason they have wrapped around. If I remove other blocks from the left column the menu can stretch out and line up properly. Any idea what could be causing this? Center left and centre right blocks contain tables with specified heights. Could this somehow impede the flow of the far left column?

Does anyone know if there is a limit to the number of items allowed in a menu block from MultiMenu 1.75? I've got a rather long menu that wraps around into a second column on this page here: Hima Ari Online. The number of items that wraps around depends on the number of other blocks present above or below it. Is there some kind of line limit? I couldn't find anything in the forums or docs about it. Using XOOPS 2.0.9.2

I didn't really understand the part about xoops_version.php, Goober.

Other than that, how badly can one screw up a site by incorrectly cloning a block. I want to know maximum damage before I try this out as I know I'll probably reach the max as likely as not. What I want to do is clone a couple blocks from Edito. Any ideas how bad it can get?

How easy is it to edit a block? Can I just download the block template, make changes, upload and overwrite the existing template? Then refresh the site? Or do I have to update the module? Is that all there is to it?

Also how easy is it to clone a block? Download, rename upload, refresh/update? Would that give me two of the same block?

Thanks DCrussader. We actually want to display entire stories with pictures that we can change on-the-fly frequently or supplement on a regular basis. I don't think editing the theme is an acceptable level of functionality. You can see how we are using it at the bottom of this page: Hima Ari Online. AMS 2.41 works fine for this but it simply isn't in the right order. Blocks might work but that begs the question: what's the point of the module then?

Any chances, Mith, of adding some reordering functionality in 2.6? It's a fairly basic feature that I'm sure a lot of users would appreciate. In the real world information doesn't come in nor is it usually prepared for a given audience in true chronological order. That's why override mechanisms are necessary. This limitation is why I never used News in the past. Retaining it in this offshoot seems like a tragedy of cosmic proportions.

Anyway we found that by tweaking the publication date in the past we can achieve the desired order.

Blank or Empty Module

Is there such a thing as an empty module, one whose only function is to be a recepticle for blocks and custom blocks? I'm looking for something distinct from modules like Tiny D, WF Sections, and so on. I'm looking for a module that works kind of like an extra top page that doesn't actually manufacture content but rather collects it from various sources.

AMS 2.41 Reordering Articles

I just installed AMS 2.41 -- nice module; well-thought out; well implemented; full-featured.

It does have a steeper learning curve than most content mangement modules and I can't for the life of me figure out how to reorder the articles on the module front page. Most such systems have the option of assigning an appearance number to override the default reverse chronological order.

If not available does anyone know of any work arounds? I'd like to be able to assign specific articles to specific positions on the page.

I also can't find the submit article link? At present I'm just typing submit.php into the browser manually.

Thanks...

I suspect it's more fundamental than that, rowdie. We tried Dreamweaver on both a Japanese system and an English system with IME installed. We also tried using Word and Notepad on the Japanese system, tried changing the page language meta tags to EUC-JP. Some have suggested the whole issue might have something to do with MBSTRING in PHP.INI but the fact remains I should not have to endure all of that to get a couple snippets of text to display properly. It's unacceptable. For the time being, unicode will have to do.
