I'm actually the author of the karate_redux_blue theme, and to be perfectly honest I can't remember a great deal of the details as it is well over a year now since I created it. As flattering as it is that you've choosen it, I wouldn't say it is the cleanest XOOPS theme around, or the most technically competent.

I did notice the "Color Scheme by Brashguide" on the logo, but being an Aussie, shouldn't that be "Colour Scheme by Brashguide" ?

I've only just installed XOOPS on Friday, and what comes as default didn't turn me on much, I saw the nice blue on one site, and so thought to go with that, at least a lot more interesting than what comes out of the box, so to speak.

If you do want to use it, then I'd suggest just using the default template. Ackbarr is the author of the karate_redux template, and although my theme is based on his karate_redux theme, it is not exactly the same.

Ok, I will see what it looks like with the default template. Being a 'noob' with XOOPS, I just thought a 'theme had to go with a template', so thought I had to use the karate_redux template, in order to us the "karate_redux_...." themes, it just seemed logical.

I'm still coming to grips with the terminolgy, but I simply see a template as the structure/layout, and the theme to be the styles, colour, and images. Following on from that assumption, I thought that a theme had to always "fit into" a template.

Thanks,

Peter

you SHOULD have:
theme.html
theme_blockcenter_c.html
theme_blockcenter_l.html
theme_blockcenter_r.html
theme_blockleft.html
theme_blockright.html
in the zip file

i have a copy of the theme you are using, but i've modified it :(

I don't have all those, only:

theme.html
theme_blockcenter_c.html

I think I have "nutted out" the problem, see here:

Hi,

I'm an XOOPS noob, so pls be nice to me.

Having a problem with a current theme, I noticed that the same theme, downloaded from 2 different websites, had different information:

===================================================
http://www.xoops-themes.org/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=5&min=40&orderby=titleA&show=10

Version: 1
Submitted Date: 2003/12/29
=========================================================

http://ackbarr.xoops.org/xoops2/modules/mydownloads/index.php

Version: 1.0
Submitted Date: 2004/7/16
=========================================

However, the contents of the ZIP file/s are the same, at least going by the number of files and the timedate stamps.

Now, the theme is "xoops2-thm_karate_redux_blue" , and the problem I'm having is that, in the above 2 zip files, there is apparently meant to be 6 HTML files, however, there are only 2, and as a consequence, I can't get the theme to work.

However, I noticed that when I downloaded just the "karate_redux" from https://xoops.org/modules/mydownloads/singlefile.php?cid=25&lid=360 , that is contained the other 4 HTML files. The info on that download however is:

--------------------
Version: 1.0
Submitted Date: 2003/3/29
--------------------------

Obviously, all things being equal, to fix the problem (outlined here - https://xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=23087&forum=32 ), I unzip the download from XOOPS site, and then overlay the latest files from http://ackbarr.xoops.org

My questions are:

1. Will this generally be the case for theme downloads ? That is, if there is a theme called "karate_redux_blue", do I first have to go find the theme d/load "karate_redux", and then overlay the ".._blue" files ? In summary, are there generic theme downloads, where a base theme has to be used in addition to any 'children' type themes ?

I really would have thought that the ".._blue" theme" would be a complete set on its' own, but if this is the way that theme downloads 'work', so be it, I'll follow the rules. I just would like to know.

2. In my hunting around to fix this problem, and noticing the fact that there are, what might first appear to be different versions, but in fact are the same release (contents), is there a definitive site somewhere that I can use to download themes ?

As I said though, I'm new to XOOPS, so at present don't understand how all this works, and having come from an osCommerce forum, where all the downloads are in one place, it's somewhat confusing to know where to look with XOOPS.

I guess there is such a big community with XOOPS, that the possibly of download files getting "out of synch" is therefore much greater ??

If there was one site that did contain all the latest themes, that would be great. :)

Thanks,

Peter

Hi,

Just downloaded the file again, from http://www.xoops-themes.org , however even though the site states:

Quote:

Contient :
4 gif (dont shot.gif)
1 jpg
3 css
6 html

there are only two .html files.

Hi,

I notice from here:

http://www.jehoshua.net/templates_c/karate_redux_blue%5etheme.html

a line of code for the left block:

$this->_smarty_include("karate_redux_blue/theme_blockleft.html",

but there is no file called that ? Also, I rechecked the ZIP file, called "xoops2-thm_karate_redux_blue.zip" for the theme, and there is no file by that name (the ..._theme_blockleft.html ) in the ZIP file.

Any clues where the 'very latest' theme would be for this, to download again, please ??

Peter

Except for the domain name reselling (which I am still working on) and the short urls (which I'm not too worried about right now), I am using XOOPS for a similar site. It does take a lot of work to get it to do what you want but once get the hang of the layout, code, etc., you can pretty much do anything you want. You really have to have a good idea of what you are wanting to do prior to starting though. At least it helps.

You can visit my site but just know that it is BY FAR not finished. http://walkernetwork.com

It's nice to know that XOOPS is being used for similar sites. I was playing with Mambo for a little while, but it really was more of a CMS, and I only wanted a few of the features. I like the way there is so much you can simply 'turn off' with XOOPS, and there is still room for custom code, etc.

Well, I like the look of your site, well done. To me, it has a sort of CSS look/feel about it. I see you use 'tinycontent' , and I'm trying to decide whether to use something like that, or look more into using blocks, because I don't want the website to go to ..../modules/news , but point the default to the main (front) page. I just need to see how to get the centre block content to display when this is used:

http://example.com/index.php

You can see how I have used blocks to display my hosting plans, I have used the tiny content duplicatable module to add my content.

For the hosting plans, there is no centre block I see, so it must all be done by using the tinycontent module. Have you used blocks within the tinycontent module, as html, or do you pull the tables/rows to display the hosting plans from the database ? For maintenance purposes, I'd prefer to try and use a db to have the plans, prices, etc, but just not too sure at this stage about how to 'position' the output display within the template.

I was even able to hack a little to make my hosting signup script (WHM AutoPilot) flow with my template. There aren't a lot of hosting templates for XOOPS which is why I am using the current one. You'd be better off creating your own though so that way you don't have the same looking site as someone else like I do now.

I use WHM myself, but haven't heard of AutoPilot. Yes, there aren't a lot of templates that suit hosting, but I just want to get the basic structure and links up, because the site has been in need of a major 'makeover' for well over a year now. :)

Thanks,

Peter

Hi,

Yes, the numbers for this new template were exactly the same as the numbers for the default template.

brash wrote:
(2) Make sure "Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?" is turned on

before I posted this topic, I did look at that option a number of times. It reads like this:

Quote:

Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?

If this option is enabled, module template .html files will be updated automatically if there are newer files under the themes/your theme/templates directory for the current theme. This should be turned off once the site goes public.

The 'newer files' didn't make sense. Yes, if there is a 'new' template uploaded/installed, then the files are newer, based on datetime stamp, but the option didn't make sense, to me, if , for instance, I had 3 or 4 templates, and wanted to revert back to an 'earlier' one. The way I 'read' the option was that it only worked, or was only valid, if the files are newer, because it does say 'newer files' ??

Anyway, selected 'yes' on that option, and changed the template and theme back to the 'karate_..', but the left hand menus have disappeared, as before, see:

http://jehoshua.net/index.php

brash wrote:
(3) Goto your modules admin section and do an update of each module, or you can just clear you template_c directory although it is a little more brutal (but quicker)

Did the update of each module, still no left hand menus.

I can easily delete the files in that path, but for now, I'd rather let people see what is happening.

I've only just loaded XOOPS, and that template is the only one that I have installed.

Hi,

This is my first install of a template/theme, so no doubt I missed a step, but when I installed the karate_redux template via admin, and then uploaded the "karate_redux_blue" theme, adjusted via admin, the theme and template to "karate_redux..", when I refreshed the browser, the new template appeared, but it didn't include the left hand columns/block (menus).

Here is the generated source code:

<td id="leftcolumn">

td>

Any clues ??

Hi,

Thanks, I'll take a look at TinyContent 1.5

Yes, as you say, why not have some form of HTML content (or PHP) , that goes on the main page ??

One of my concerns is SEO, as one site was heavily penalised by Google recently by having duplicate content (it happened by mistake). I could use mod_rewrite to make /modules/news be displayed on the front page, but then if the link to the news section is osmewhere else, bots may pick it up as duplicate content, I don;t know ? Also, I would rather have:

http://forums.example.com

than .........

http://example.com/modules/newbb

I'd rather supply links to the website as:

http://example.com

and then NOT have the usual .............

http://example.com/modules/news (or sections or whatever)

I don't know much about bots/crawlers (still learning), but I do know they prefer to just hit a website at the 'default' page, and simply follow links.

That's why I have added the 'Policies' on the menu today, just as simple links.

Having the module approach for menus is nice though, easy to manange and easy to say who can look at what, it's just this main page thing, which is in fact, such a basic need for a website.

Thanks,

Peter
