Hi,

How do I change the content shown on the front page, see here:

http://jehoshua.net/index.php

so that there is not a blank area in the middle ?

Yes, I know usually you can point a 'module' as the default main page, but I don't want to do that, I want to be able to add some text/images, in say one or two columns, where nothing appears now.

There were three modules recommended to do this:

* Homepage
* Freecontent
* CJaycontent

and I have had trouble finding some of these in the downloads/modules. Anyway, my reason for posting here is to find out if the above are in use, what your comments and experiences (problems ?)have been with these modules. Are there any other modules that do the same ??

Should I just hack index.php ??

Thanks,

Peter

Basically, XOOPS only runs modules... this is nice, except when you are first installing the site, there is no HTML content manager module.

I cant reccommend one, since i havent needed it YET, but I would probably use TinyContent 1.5 from http://www.chapi.de

xoops desperately needs a default module to manage HTML content. This question is asked like hundreds of times per month.

Its a great content management system, so how can we get a default module for managing HTML content??

Hi,

Thanks, I'll take a look at TinyContent 1.5

Yes, as you say, why not have some form of HTML content (or PHP) , that goes on the main page ??

One of my concerns is SEO, as one site was heavily penalised by Google recently by having duplicate content (it happened by mistake). I could use mod_rewrite to make /modules/news be displayed on the front page, but then if the link to the news section is osmewhere else, bots may pick it up as duplicate content, I don;t know ? Also, I would rather have:

http://forums.example.com

than .........

http://example.com/modules/newbb

I'd rather supply links to the website as:

http://example.com

and then NOT have the usual .............

http://example.com/modules/news (or sections or whatever)

I don't know much about bots/crawlers (still learning), but I do know they prefer to just hit a website at the 'default' page, and simply follow links.

That's why I have added the 'Policies' on the menu today, just as simple links.

Having the module approach for menus is nice though, easy to manange and easy to say who can look at what, it's just this main page thing, which is in fact, such a basic need for a website.

Thanks,

Peter

Hi,

Well after hearing of a number of modules that I would have to use to have content on the main page, I didn't realise how easy it would be to just do it with a block, see:

http://jehoshua.net/index.php

The small 'web hosting' message is just a test, but no modules needed, just used a HTML block, put it in the centre, activated it for annonymous users, and it worked.

This is great, now I know this is the product for me, I'll be able to control any sort of content on the front page _without_ having to use modules, or to have to use:

http://example.com/modules/news

or whatever is "pointed to" the main page. This is really good news, XOOPS is even more powerful than I first thought. :)

Thanks,

Peter

Of course, that's so simple I don't know why I didn't think of it before....*smacks forehead* :P
