OS & Language specific modules

I'm currently working on a module that allows one to track song submissions of members. It's fairly specialized, and I don't really intend the module for anything by my site. But, I would be releasing the module (and the source -- GPL) to the XOOPS community for others to hack with.

How here's the situation. Since it's much easier for me to work with minimal files for the time being and not having to worry about doing cross-platform & cross-language aspects of the module, I'm coding that way -- for now. The reality is that once I get the module functional, I intend to go back and clean up some of these things: Moving some of the instruction blocks to the language file, directory separator place holders, and so on.

My question is actually a very simple one to answer. I realize that this might be a somewhat backwards approach. But it's one that makes life less crazy for me. Supposing I finish the module and it's fully functional but requires Linux (or Unix based OS) and English, should I release it at that point? Or would you rather I wait until it's all sorts of cross-platform and cross-language (except that I won't do the translation) compliant?

Honestly, I havn't tried to mess with anything else. There might be an option for that, but I havn't even thought to try.

Personally, my templates tend to be very simple. For example, the module I'm working on right now has a standard header and a standard footer. Then the body is dynamic. Sometimes its a table, other times its just a few paragraphs or lists. So I tend to just have a smarty variable to hold everything in the body. Once that template is done, I reload the module (it reloads the template), and then I can code the behavior of said body, and I don't have to reload the module again through this process. I just reload the page in my browser as you would with any other PHP development project.

OUt of curiosity, there is an option in the system options to read/update templates from the disk. Does that affect module templates? Or is that just for themes? I'd try it myself, but I'm at work, and my 2.0.x installation isn't public for me to check.

The infamous Avatar Question...

Alright, I've read through the forums, and I'm a bit confused. I realize that the 2.0.x branch does not have avatars included already. And I've found scripts to update them and what-not, but I havn't used any of the sort yet. I'm a bit confused as to the whole Avatar issue.

I'll be upgrading an old system using 1.3.7. Everyone has their avatars already defined, and they are on our server. Now my question is, since I'm upgrading, will I need to use any of those scripts? Or will the new XOOPS engine detect and update the new tables to account for the old avatars?

As always, I'm just concerned about the upgrade. I'm trying to make it a smooth transition for my site's members. Thanks for all your help.

Am I to assume that you mean I can overwrite all the files with the new files?

Is it safe to assume that all the tables in the mySQL database use the same column field names and what-not?

Upgrade from 1.3.7 to 2.0.x

I have a stable version of my site running version 1.3.7 of Xoops. I have been dangling in the past for a bit while I got my themes and custom modules up to date for the 2.0.3 version (which now is going to be upgraded again to 2.0.5). Now I am satisfied with my modules and what-not, and I want to upgrade my stable site from 1.3.7 to the new and improved 2.0.5.

I cannot lose any of my members database, discussion boards or my news database and so on. I want to upgrade the site with the most minimal amount of effort possible, and I want to be sure not to corrupt anything.

What is the best way to upgrade my site to the most current version without destroying anything? Are there utilities that I need to download? How can I be sure that the database will be intact and compatible when I'm done?

Thanks for all your help.

I realize this is an old topic, but I was pointed here by someone else.

I am having very similar problems now. My System Admin icon dropped out early this morning after no major change. I tried reloading the module as you had directed above, and I still don't have the icon. I checked all the cache folders, and they are all set properly with the correct permissions and what-not.

Is there any other solution that perhaps I havn't tried yet?

Incidentally, I'm using XOOPS 2.0.3 on a Debian Linux server with all the current versions of PHP, mySQL and so on.

Not permanent? You mean if someone logs out and then logs back in, their theme preferences don't save?

Is there a hack so that it will save?

Theme Change question

I'm using XOOPS 2.0.3.

User's can't seem to change their theme. In fact, it's not even an option in their preferences. I have two themes allowed, and custom-sessions enabled. But alas, no theme options.

Mind you, I came here (to the XOOPS site) to see if I could change my theme here. I don't know if I'm just looking in the wrong area, or what. But I can't change my theme here either. (Of course, I do realize that perhaps the admins here won't allow it).

Any help would be appreciated.
