I have sent you a PM John, but thought I would run this by everyone, the one difference with the way I did it, was that in effect, I deleted all my PMs, has anyone else tried deleting all PMs either from the database of from the "Old" Inbox, without the new PM module active or installed?

I see what you want and agree it would be the easiest, but you could make a "Business" group for example, and add those who want to "advertise" their details to the world to that group. Then adjust permissions for that field. Those who don't want to put an entry in to a certain field don't have to it will just be blank. You could make multiple Groups, yes, more time consuming but would give you great control.

You can add members to more than one group still, well I think you can, make fields visible to only certain groups and searchable only by certain groups. You would have to make a plan on paper first though lol, could get confusing.

try deleting the files in both the cache and the templates-c folder, from memory I think they both should have a index.html file, that you don't delete

Files will be regenerated, there is only index.html in the folders when you first install.

Is there any files in cache and templates_c, the cache changed at some stage recentlyish (is that a word), I can't remember when it exactly happened.

In 2.3 the caches are now in xoops_data/caches

hit Crtl + F5 sometimes when all else fails ;o) does 2.0.18.2 use the root/cache and root/templates_c folders, like is there files in there, pathetic I know but we have had lots of upgrades lately and I really cant remember lol

I am thinking out aloud here, just wonder if you have the default theme uploaded in themes and you deleted the clouds theme would it revert back to the default theme, just a thought, I really don't know if it does.

Maybe have to delete the cache files except for index.html if it is in there. What version of XOOPS are you using?

Oh also, although it may not have made a difference in your case, if I am adjusting themes, I will often activate the system themes block and make the theme you are working on selectable plus a theme that you know works, like the default theme, then if you can at least see that block you can change back to a working theme.
