2.0.16 -> 2.0.17.1-rc upgrade problem

I thought I followed the instructions, but there was a problem. When I executed [my xoops_url]/upgrade/ in the browser, it went to [my xoops_url]/upgrade/install/index.php and yielded a blank page. There were no instructions to follow.

Then I went to my home page, and got the XOOPS (new) install page. So, what do you suppose happened? Is it fixable? This is a new site, but I would not like to have to re-install.

Sounds like you might need a new host that offers you better control of your own site. You could look around Webhostingtalk.com for ideas or ask others whom they are using. I have been using resellerzoom.com/hostingzoom.com for several years, now, and have been very pleased. They offer cPanel, which is my preferred control panel.

Exactly what mine shows. There is no "new story published in a given category".

How do you mean? In XOOPS admin? And, if I change it there, wouldn't it mess up everything else which depends upon the correct itme?

In the meantime, here's one for the X-files. Before last night, the last time I checked extCal, the time was between 8:00pm and 9:00pm, and the date had already changed. Last night, I checked each hour from 7:00pm on, and the darn thing didn't change the date until 1:00am. I can't say for sure, but I think it's just guessing. Wonder how you would code a "guess what day it is" algorithm?

One thing I do know is that a calendar module that doesn't know what day it is has limited utility. It's hard to believe that it hasn't been fixed, but then they won't even acknowledge the problem, let alone address it. Too bad, because it's a nice module.

Four weeks, 424 views, a few replies, still no answer.

Did you took the pain to read the answers you HAD on our site ?
I don't think.

Yes, Hervet, I did. I'm looking at it right now as a matter of fact. Like I said, there were a few replies, but replies are not necessarily answers. I posted a screen shot showing that the notification is not there. The notification to which we are referring is, of course, the one for "new articles published in a given category." We are not talking about the one for "new articles submitted" which is there.

If it didn't make it into 1.54 & 1.55 as in your announcement, just say so. If it is supposed to be there, then where is it?

If anyone who reads this has News 1.54 or 1.55 installed, please check and see if you have this notification and post it here. If anyone else has it, then I either have multiple bad installs or I do not have the correct source files.

Maybe a stupid question, but it's a mistake I once made with eXtCal, did you set the cache for the module or a block somewhere?

If so, set it to no cache.

There's the following in module preferences:

Quote:

RSS : cache time in minute

It is currently set to 60 minutes which is the default. I didn't change it.

Then there is the place in system preferences where you can set each module to cache or not. Everything is set to "No cache."

If there is another place to look, I don't know where it is.

That's the way it is with open-source software. Sometimes you get prompt assistance, sometimes you don't get any help.

The old "if you want it to work, fix it yourself (or hire someone to do it for you)" approach. You may be absolutely correct, and I may be looking at this thing all wrong, but I believe this is a recipe for failure, and I'll wager that I'm not alone. There must be at least 2 or 3 of us who feel this way.

The success of any software, open source or not, depends upon lots of people using it, and the number of those who can "fix it themselves" is very small relative to the rest of us.

I would not like to have to learn another CMS, but not a day goes by that I don't think about it. Actually, I do want to learn php and/or someday hire someone to do some things. Whether it will be with XOOPS or something else I don't know, but that's beside the point, anyway. The point is that there are many, many more who will never, ever do either, and I propose that it is those whom developers should be thinking about.

Like I say, though, I could be wrong.

At times it's really hard to get answers from module developers. I posted the following question re extCal on Zoullou.net on August 14:

http://www.zoullou.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=343&forum=1

Three weeks, 230 views, zero replies.

I posted the following on August 5 on Instant-zero.com re News 1.55 (& 1.54):

http://xoops.instant-zero.com/modules/newbbex/viewtopic.php?topic_id=229&forum=1&viewmode=flat&order=ASC&start=0&

Four weeks, 424 views, a few replies, still no answer.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that neither of these is a tough question. Maybe they're just too simple to warrant the time to answer them. I don't know.

I am aware that these guys, like many others, are donating their time, and I have always been appreciative of that. On the other hand, every person who tries XOOPS and XOOPS modules is donating his/her time, also--sometimes hundreds of hours. I know that I have hundreds of hours invested myself, but that's more because I'm slow than anything else. . Also, I started from scratch and didn't know a CMS from PMS.

The fact remains, however, that, free or not, everyone has a frustration threshold that, when approached, makes them antsy about every little thing that happens and when exceeded makes them give up and move on to something else.

I do not want to seem impatient or ungrateful, therefore, nor do I want to have unreasonable expectations regarding support for donated work, so the question is what should one expect? When asking a question and waiting on a reply, how long is long enough?

I posted a question about this over at zoullou.net two weeks ago and have bumped it twice since. If they know the answer, they are apparently not willing to share it. Pretty simple question, but no reply whatsoever.

For me, anyway, AM-Events is not the answer, either. I installed it and entered 1 event which started on Sept 1 and ended on Sept 6. The program shows it as terminating on the 7th instead of the 6th. Plus, the program hasn't been updated in a long time.

So, still looking.

In cPanel, when you click on a tar.gz or tgz file, it gives you the option to unpack. That's how I do it. CPanel didn't use to be able to unpack zip files, though. I don't know if it still has this problem or not, as I always convert zip files to tar.gz format with IZArc (freeware) before I upload them because it makes them much smaller.

Do you have cPanel?

Okay, I posted the question at zoullou.net, and extCal is NOT compatible with the 2.2.x branch. A pity.
