Well, I recommend checking out My Recent Post on the subject. Someone else had that exact same question in a different forum.

I don't know them all, but there are codes, yes. And the links I provided use most of the same ones we use here, although for obvious security reasons, this forum doesn't allow the running of scripts in our posts. I noticed one difference in that many bulletin boards use "link" where we use "URL."

I did see some information about tables in one of those links, so you may be in luck.

One thing that I do quite a lot when I want my post to look exactly how I want is to compose a post in GoLive (or any Web design software) and then copy the html (excluding everything before and including "<body>" into the post.

We can't use html here, I don't believe, but your own site can in your forums if you set it that way in the preferences.

Good luck!

I could swear that there used by a comprehensive list here once upon a time...

Other CMSes (PHPNuke, Joomla!) use the same code, so perhaps an answer and a more complete list can be found elsewhere...googling...googling...googling...

aHA!

Here is a pretty good explanation!

http://virtualatdp.berkeley.edu:8081/tva/intro/forumcode/

Now all we have to do is rewrite it so as not to completely plagiarize their good work. And I notice, for example, that they use "link" rather than "URL"

This site isn't bad either:

http://www.hardforum.com/misc.php?do=bbcode

as is this one;

http://ihub.org/forum/misc-do_bbcode.html

Of course, THIS forum doesn't let us go plugging PHP into our posts, I don't think...

Hypothetically, what do you feel we should do when we find a real case of misuse and GPL violation? How should we go about this?

Given the Global reach of XOOPs, it seems likely that someone, somewhere is doing that very thing. Enforcing compliance can be quite difficult, especially if the seller/installer is a fly-by-night operation. While forming a legal committee and/or fund is probably premature, some attempt at forming a policy regarding license may not be a bad idea.

One way to start would be with the identification of players in this hypothetical case:

-XOOPs
-The Seller
-The Customer
-The governing authority with jurisdiction in the Sellers physical location
-Any appropriate national/international organizations to whom complaints are to be directed

Some Cease and Desisit Letter might be drafted, perhaps with input from some legal expert:
Quote:

Dear _________

This letter is to inform you that XOOPs has become aware of your non-compliance with the terms of the GPL license in connection with the sale of XXX to Seller XXX on XX/XX/XX.

These are terms to which you agreed when you...

In accordance with the ..., you are hereby required to Cease and Desist from...

Should you fail to honor these terms, XOOPs will take X action.

Copies of this letter have been provided to XXX, YYY, and ZZZ. All inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to X.

Sincerely,
XOOPs

The buyer might be notified to be sure that they are made aware that they purchased something they could have gotten for "free."

I don't know what legal recourse is available in a situation like this, should it occur, but surely there is a precedent for it or something very similar.

Can it be argued that the XOOPs community suffers any actual damages from the sale of the system outside compliance with the license? Maybe yes, maybe no. It is on one hand a matter of giving credit where credit is due and on the other, as I said earlier, protecting the reputation of XOOPs from unjustified harm due to the actions of rogue "installers."

RSS time in /local.php changed in 2.2.4 Patch

At the bottom of the 2.2.4 Patch installation instructions is the suggestion:
Quote:
RSS time in ROOT/language/english/local.php has been changed to take into account the time zone. You might want to change your own language file to fix the same bug.

My timestamp went bye-bye with this patch install, so can someone elaborate on that for me? I'm guessing that some change needs to be made somewhere between lines 53 and 60. I just don't know what it might be...

Appreciate any help you can provide!

There is one possibility that I can think of:

1) when you set user permissions, you (logically) went to the News permissions page, clicked the appropriate check-boxes, and hit "submit" at the bottom of the page. It took me a little while to discover that to set each group of permissions (View, Submit, and Auto-Approve), you must:

a. click the appropriate check-boxes in the top group's box
b) then click the submit button under that box
c) wait for the page to reload
d) scroll down and set permissions for the next group, click submit
e) follow that routine again for the last group of permission.

I can't tell you how many times I've added a forum, calendar, or news category and forgotten to set the permissions correctly even though I could SWEAR I did it right the first time.

Yes, I think that I have an idea about what you're talking about, though I am curious as to why you chose to use a page that is not wrapped within XOOPs. There are several guestbook modules in the repository.

Alternatively, if you can run CGI scripts, you could go to Matt's Script Archive and download the replacement for his guestbook, the NMS Guestbook. That could be run separately from the XOOPs system.

But that would not be nearly as easy as making one of the XOOPs guestbooks work for you.

I do NOT think that what m0nty is saying is arrogant nonsense. I think that yes, this situation is shifty. Yes, losing a listing on opensourcecms is a little bit of a black eye for XOOPs. And yes, full releases that can live out in the wild are preferable to patches.

But as someone who is not a developer, but just a webmaster taking advantage of a great open-source creation, I'm grateful that when problems do arise, solutions are quickly offered, even if they aren't completely plug-and-play. And black eyes go away pretty quickly.

XOOPs had a number of headaches in the last year and endured them because the community showed some solidarity. There are going to be patches and bug-fixes and security updates. I know that, however they occur, I just have to deal with them.

Now. That said, I do wish that I had realized that 2.2.3 was not intended for production sites. Maybe this was mentioned somewhere, but I didn't see it when I installed. Maybe someone can answer this:

If my version of 2.2.3 was released on 10/30/05 and is labeled "2.2.3 FINAL," is it 2.2.3a ? (Does "a" signify "final?") I can't find anything anywhere that tells me. If not, do I have to wait for 2.4 ? Should I use the "XOOPS 2.2.3 to 2.0.x" downgrade script? What's the recommended course of action?

***UPDATE*** Never mind. I installed the patch and life seems to be fine still.

Legal if they leave the GPL information, yes. But someone would have to buy one of these packages to discover if that information has been removed or not.

I don't think there is a thing wrong with using XOOPs to set up a site for someone and charge them to do it. What I do worry about is this: If they offer free installation and maintenance for a year, but don't keep up with necessary security or other upgrades and their clients experience data theft or something, might XOOPs suffer any unjustified blows to its reputation?

I realize that it the liability would fall on their heads, but still.

You might try installing the module XOOP-Stats or one of the others in the statistics category of the module repository. I don't use it, since I have Web-analyzer running on my server, but it would seem to do the job.

There are two possibilities that I can think of:

If you try to fill them all out at once, only the last group of permissions (Auto-Approve) is enabled.

If you already figured that out and this was not the problem, I would then ask if you are using the default theme. If you are using the default theme, immediately after you select eXTCal from the main menu, a "Submit Event" button should pop up underneath the main eXTCal button. I can't remember which theme it was, but there was one I tried that didn't handle the sub-item buttons correctly.

One thing that I did, because so many users didn't see that a "submit" button popped up, was to add a link to the submit page in the template file: extcal_calendar.html

But let me know if either of the first two options applied.
