I've come across a company selling Xoops, yeah thats right they are selling xoops.

http://popscript.com/search.php?CategoryID=6&SubcategoryID=58

Then click on the myspace link(s), and use the demo, it's obvious on the demo screen but if your still not convinced then click on the register form.

This company is selling XOOPS with minor alterations.

Any one wanna buy some, lol

STAY CLEAR.
Kind Regards.

MySpace Gold Edition 7.0 is the most advanced social networking software that you can use. It has more features and options that any other software of its kind. MySpace Gold Edition 7.0 even has more features and options for users and the admin, then sites like MySpace.com, friendster. There is literally no other software or site that can offer or compare to the features coded into it.

*Except XOOPS of course, which is what it is..*

nah they say the $57 is for the software, you get free installation & support..

of course it's GPL which means any1 can use XOOPS and even sell it if they want.. but they can't remove the copyrights in the script source itself.. (i suspect they may have tho) but if they haven't they are free to do as they please.

Hi guys,

In fact they are charging for installation, hosting and support :
Quote:
** This software comes with free professional installation
** 1 year of completely FREE hosting and professional customer service.
(including 1 on 1 live chat)

They are not selling the code, they are selling services, which is totally legitimate. XOOPS is licensed under GPL and accoridng to this licence, you may charge the client anything you want, but the code itself will never be the property of the client. You are not selling the code but the service.

So there is nothing wrong here and for 57$, you get a script, 1 year hosting and 1 year customer support, I would say it's a pretty good deal if you need something like this and can't do it yourself.

The only problem is a moral one. Should they have mentionned it is based on XOOPS ? It would have been a good thing. But they don't have to. As long as the proper credits are wrriten in the code itself, everything's legitimate.

However, please note that I am not a lawyer and this is only my interpretation of the GPL.

Cheers !

Don't miss out on the greatest social networking software to ever hit the internet community!

Order your copy today and have a live site with professional install within 4 hours.

Software is written in PHP and uses 1 MySQL database. Software is based on "opensource" meaning none of the code is encrypted and you may modify it anyway that you choose.

You beat me to the punch Marcan.

Your understanding and my understanding are one in the same. I actually was considering starting a similar service, but I have every intention of giving FULL, PUBLIC credit for the software to it's rightful copyright holder... XOOPS Making a clear distinction that my clients are buying my services, not the software.

By the looks of their site, they're not doing anything that is illegal. However, their choice of words could have been better. It does "read" like you're buying the software and not the service.
Insanity can be defined as "doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Stupidity is not a crime. Therefore, you are free to go.

Legal if they leave the GPL information, yes. But someone would have to buy one of these packages to discover if that information has been removed or not.

I don't think there is a thing wrong with using XOOPs to set up a site for someone and charge them to do it. What I do worry about is this: If they offer free installation and maintenance for a year, but don't keep up with necessary security or other upgrades and their clients experience data theft or something, might XOOPs suffer any unjustified blows to its reputation?

I realize that it the liability would fall on their heads, but still.
Improve the time.

Your right with regards to there choice of words, I discussed this with some one earlier and they stated it's legal, I don't know and won't argue that point, but the site states:

Quote:
** This software comes with free professional installation
** 1 year of completely FREE hosting and professional customer service.
(including 1 on 1 live chat)

You get free installation and you get 1 year free hosting and customer service.

Now thats all FREE so what are people actually paying for.

Maybe the money for looking at the web site? lol

I'm sorry to prolong this discussion, but I really dont understand what people pay for if they say the installation is free and the hosting is free, did I miss something?
Kind Regards.
