Have you checked out catads, here?

Easy to use, seems to work pretty well (for me at least).

I've noticed that some themes (in particular) and modules are packaged differently than others--this could be causing the problem.

For instance, you might download a module in folder "coolmodule" then open that folder and find a folder called "modules" then inside that folder find another "coolmodule" folder. The only module to upload would be the last one. On other occasions the top/main folder called "coolmodule" would need to be uploaded.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining this well--but open the folders that contain the non-working modules and see if something doesn't jump out at you.

Your are asking for basic/standard XOOPS functionality. You can set any module as your "home page" and the news module that comes with the XOOPS core does all of this (and much more--like providing an automatic rss feed). Rename it "blog" under system admin>>modules if it helps.

It shows all posts(most recent first) by default but one of it's standard features is the "topic selector" that only shows articles/posts related the topic you select.
(If you can't see the topic selector, go to news then preferences and choose "yes" beside "Select yes to display navigation box at the top of each news page".)

News performs the other basic functions you mention--and you can control who has access (read articles) and admin(write articles) under System Admin>>Groups.

Might be problem with your browser cache. Clear the browser cache after you login and see if it suddenly works.

I'm sure this can be handled, to some extent, via css. I'm far from a css guru so I'll leave explaining that route to someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Another way would behttps://xoops.org/modules/repository/singlefile.php?cid=43&lid=1343

I haven't used this--but as I understand it, it allows one to use a different theme for each module. So customize your theme (or another theme) for the module in question, then use this tool to tell XOOPS you want to use that theme for that module.

my site, www.ontheshelves.com is using the exnews theme. It looks fine so far, but...the stories on the news page, which is set as my top page, are...uhm...overlapping. They're not mixing up, but the images used for one story, are forcing the story headline below it to indent. i've never seen it happen before...and i could use some help to try to seperate these better.

Check out this thread.

I can relate to one of the posts in the above thread in that I have set up websites for people that can barely use Word, much less know css, html or latin. They need to be able to paste in a picture, type in a few words and expect it to "just work."

Here's my basic code-free solution (if you post with html disabled). Just hit enter a couple of times at the end of your text. Use preview to see if you hit it enough. You can get clever and hit enter a couple of times before your text (and the same number of times after) to "float" your short text beside the picture.

Of course, when someone resizes their browser, they'll see a blank area at the bottom of your post, but try it for yourself, it's really not anything you'd notice if you weren't looking for it.

Any reason you wouldn't prefer to use one of the html content manager modules like?:

XT-Conteudo
Cjay Content
Tiny Content

I use Tiny Content and am happy with it. I know XT-Conteudo works fine as well.

The only thing I'd suggest (if you prefer using news for tutorials--and why not?) is to install one of the other umpteen news modules and rename it "Tutorials". Then rename the block titles to match this.

Now you'll have "news" and "tutorials" listed as menu options and can have a "recent news" block and a "latest tutorials" block. Now it's no problem to have a "most popular tutorials" block, grant users the right to submit one and not the other etc, etc...

Of course you could do something similar just by setting up various topics in your news modules, but I'm guessing you'll like this way better.

I'm using "budget" shared hosting and I've never noticed the ram usage on their server go as high as 40%. 512mb ram sounds weak for shared hosting (if that's what you have). It might be more than enough to host a site via your broadband connection on a home computer...

As far as the first post considering a dedicated host--unless you have REALLY heavy traffic, I wouldn't go that route. I'd keep insisting that my hosting company do something (upgrade, move my site to another server). If that doesn't solve your problem in a hurry, try another hosting company.

I'm not sure if I understand your question but I suspect what you're looking for is "group permissions".

Group permissions, for instance, can allow you to see a menu option while logged in as webmaster that anonymous users cannot see.

Go to the system administration page, click the "systems admin" button, then click groups. When you reach the groups page, choose (at the top) which group you want to modify. Once you've set up what you want that group to be able to see or do, click "update group" at the bottom.

It's up to you, but I'm thinking it's a safe bet that you don't want to grant any anonymous users admin rights. On the other hand, you may choose to allow anonymous users to access everything.

Hope this helps...
