That is kind of weird when you stop to think of it. I guess it's got a lot to do with proximity. I live near the Bronx border, and the majority of people here never call New York "New York." Usually we'll say, "I'm going downtown," -which usually means Manhattan - or "I'm going to the Bronx" or Queens or Staten Island or Brooklyn depending on the borough we're heading towards." And when we go back home, we're always headed "uptown."
