You could check out the Countdown module that I'm working on. It's still in the very first version, but is stable and working. As of right now, users can add countdowns for themselves, but I intend on adding public / private countdowns. Any other feature requests would be a plus. It's a really basic module right now. If you want to add any features to the bug tracker on my site, please go ahead, and I will decide if it is a worty feature of being added in.
