We are very happy to let you know that Eduardo has started to work on the "Presentation Layer" in XOOPS 2.6.0, using his fantastic Common Utilities as basis to merge them into the Core

Resized Image

We all know and love the work done by Eduardo over the years, and therefore we know that XOOPS 2.6.0 will have an awesome Admin GUI for the Core and for the modules!

Goffy joins the German-speaking XOOPS Team

It's nice to see a new energy in the German-speaking XOOPS community, which recently added a new team member, Goffy, to its Admin team:

Resized Image

Goffy has been using XOOPS since 2004, and got into more serious development since 2010. He is author and contributor to several modules, incl. the excellent xNewsletter.

Bleekk, another member of the team, who we all know from his cool theme designs for XOOPS, is working on a new theme for the XOOPS German-speaking community, and the preview looks excellent (I've seen it and I loved it!!!! )

We are very happy to see the re-energized team, and wish Goffy and the whole German-speaking community much success and fun with XOOPS!

Viva XOOPS!

bXpress: a lightweight forum for XOOPS

Some of you might be already aware of bXpress, a module to create a forum section in XOOPS, with the peculiarity of being very light and easy to use. Panel de Control Well, today's news is that, for some time now, I have been testing it in Xoops México, and so far the results have been satisfactory. Therefore I have decided to publish the version 1.2 Beta.

Module Features

From the beginning, when I published the first version of bXpress, it was always clear to me that the module should focus on simplicity and ease of use to provide a real alternative to existing options. So, this basic feature —lightness to its simplicity— has remained unchanged. Partial list of features:
  • A lightweight Forum
  • Amazing simplicity and ease of use
  • Organization of forums in categories
  • Assigning permissions for user groups
  • Supports image (or icon) representative of each forum
  • Supports file upload
  • Supports Short URL
  • Supports annoucements that can be configured to be deployed in various places on the forum.
  • Includes a reporting tool for users
  • Assigned by forum moderators
  • Now supports posts likes for each entry New
  • All templates use Bootstrap 3
  • Includes more functional, adaptable and easily configurable blocks (preferably through the Common Utilities block manager)
Portada del Módulo

Requirements

bXpress have the same basic requirements that other modules developed with Common Utilities:
Warning: this version of bXpress is in beta state. If you want to use note all that that implies. Although so far in Xoops México has worked very well, could lead to errors undetected so far. If you want to check the operation of the module, I invite you to visit the Xoops México forum and leave a message. Download bXpress 1.2 Beta

Beortho.com with new theme based on Ethernial

A new theme, based on Ethernial has been created for beortho.com by Eduardo Cortés. The new theme includes full integration with Formulize, a module designed for forms creation and reports on the web. Resized Image
Another relevant feature of this new site, is a new Landing Page for QuickPages that is used as home page. This landing page has two different layouts: one for anonymous users and another for registered users. The biggest challenge for this project was the integration with formulize, because this module has all presetation code (HTML) hard coded in PHP files, however the results are satisfactory. In words of François, Webmaster of beortho.com:
I had a big project: to redesign my website with some particular needs, like changing the UX for an awesome module called Formulize. For that job I didn’t only need a web designer, I needed also experience in php and javascript. Because I’ve already worked 2 years ago with Eduardo (bitcer0), I knew what he can do with rmcommon, and how he changed my UX with xoops. One month later he has built a beautiful design (as always) and he gaves a powerful new way to use this module, without hardcoding. That’s just unbelievable. Thank you, really.

Bootnewage CPanel theme (Beta release)

I am happy to introduce a new CPanel (Admin) theme for XOOPS, completely rewritten with Bootstrap, in order to provide visibility and compatibility with different mobile devices.

It is important to stress that unfortunately, with versions of XOOPS 2.5.x that support Bootstrap, this Admin theme may not work properly. Therefore this Beta version should be tested first locally, before using it in a production site.

I have changed many file in the System module, in addition to many other Core files, so it is necessary to do the tests on a fresh installation of XOOPS on your localhost, because if there is incompatibility with this new code, you're not risking anything.

However, even the Default theme will be changed, to avoid any problems.

This below is a screenshot of the theme that can be modified in various colors just like the default theme.

Libraries used:
- bootstrap.css 3.3.2
- bootstrap.theme.css 3.3.2
- bootstrap.min.js 3.3.2
- jquery.min.js 1.11.2
- jquery-ui.min.js 1.10.4

As I wrote in this thread for some problems, you might find difficulty with some features.

I must point out that in the package there are other themes, in addition to the default, but they are not complete like this one. You can still edit them to your liking in the expectation that we can use in production.

Newoni, a new free theme

I'm thrilled to announce my first new XOOPS theme in a few years!
It's been a long while, but I hope this one is worth it ;).

I present to you... Newoni!
Resized Image

Newoni is built upon the wonderful xbootstrap which is a wonderful base template to use (if you are familiar with Bootstrap, which unfortunately I'm not :P).

The design itself has been heavily inspired by the current Neowin website.

Features
* Responsive design
* Included image slider
* Modified login block template
* Modified search block template
* And many others.

Demo
My demo site is currently not yet ready, but once it is I'll post it in the comments below.

Download
You can download Newoni for free on the Github repository: https://github.com/kevjoe/xoops-newoni
If you prefer a direct download link, you can click here.

Please keep in mind that Newoni is being released as a work in progress. It's ready for usage on any website, but not all templates have been styled as much as I like them to be. I however couldn't wait to release it ;).

Support
If you've got any questions about Newoni, feel free to ask me about them below, or mail me on kevin@kevjoe.be.

Roadmap/Update 2.6.0

I get questions about the timing and status of XOOPS 2.6.0, along with questions about how to help. I apologize for not doing a better job of communicating in this area. It is great to know that there is such interest!

The short answer is, we've come a long way, but there is still more to do. But, the good news is the end is in sight!

I've have entered a list of issues on GitHub that represent what I consider the essential changes that are still required. These issues are tagged "roadmap" and can be seen here: https://github.com/XOOPS/XoopsCore/labels/roadmap

This roadmap is only to the completion of the 2.6.0 target and is where development resources will be directed. This roadmap gives us a great base for future enhancements.

The list is quite manageable, and even more so with more help. If you see anything on the list that you would be interested in helping with, please jump in. Even if a given issue is assigned to someone, coordinated collaborative help would likely be greatly appreciated. Just indicate your interest in a given issue as a comment, and we can make sure we are not duplicating each other's efforts.

I will be happy to answer any questions and expound on the issues as needed. The best way to ask questions is probably as a comment on the issue on GitHub, that way everyone benefits from the discussion.

We have recently added some contributing guidelines on GitHub. The GitHub environment is a bit different from the SVN environment used for earlier XOOPS versions, so it includes some explanations and links to resources that might help in the new environment. See: https://github.com/XOOPS/XoopsCore/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md

In addition to the the roadmap issues, there are ongoing efforts to improve the quality of XoopsCore codebase. One example is unit testing. Alain91 has been doing a fantastic job creating and maintaining unit tests. (Insert a round of applause here. )

Unfortunately the rate of change in the remaining issues makes that effort a frustrating job. While we hope the individual developers will assist in updating the tests related to their changes, having "specialists" that watch that area and help keep up with the changes is a huge help. If you are familiar with or interested in unit testing using phpunit, this might be an opportunity to contribute.

Even if you can't program, you can still help out. Install a current copy of XoopsCore and try it out. Reporting bugs or other issues you notice is a big help.

With your help we can make this the best XOOPS ever!

Thanks for your attention. I'll get back to coding now.
-Richard

Favicon Generator Module

As I said in the last post, some new modules are being made available to the XOOPS community, and first out is a Favicon Module. Originally it was meant as a commercial module, but when I first started using XOOPS, way, way back there, everything was FREE, which I loved. So in that spirit... ;)

It comes with admin section, hidden counter, and language files.

Option to delete created favicons, and reset counter.

Offer your visitors the opportunity to create their own Favicon from your site.
