#OOPS#ed if ya do, #OOPS#ed if ya don't :nods:

there are a few under 18's.

in fact i could name a few 16 yr olds too.

i didn't delete the article either, i only un-approved it and added a note, which means that XOOPS management team should make the ultimate decision on it.

I think both sides of the argument hold solid truths.

Looks like one for the casm of undecided questions.

Actually I added this comment to make it clearer of the nature of the site.

I'm not a prude, I have accidently browsed onto this type of site occasionally - but I do agree that a front page warning would be a good idea to save accidental browsing ... the images are rather bold, after all.

Although I'm glad to see another interesting usage of Xoops, a little advanced warning of a pre-site page would save a few red faces ... particularly if like myself you do browse from work

(And just to stress - the news article wasn't deleted - it's just held awaiting decision....)

@davidl2

Ah yes, well that certainly does add a new light to the subject.

This is a tough matter, making this decision will most likely have negative results in either direction.

While XOOPS holds a responsibility to not allow "offensive" material to be easily accessed by minors. XOOPS must also consider that "offensive" is a flexible word.

Perspective is to Offense as Witnesses are to Murders

While the idea may translate itself, all the stories will inevitably be different.

Tough decision. Considering that there are other terms that are often used to define this type of content.

"Art" and "Smut" Its tough to say who ultimately decides

Thankfully I am not the one who needs to decide if XOOPS will play Big Brother.

Actually I see myself more as a Winston Smith than a Big Brother

Seriously though, I've raised this issue with a few moderators, as I think it is something we should be a bit clearer on.

It's only fair to all concerned.

My two cents - I don't think XOOPS.org should censor sites on the basis of pornographic content. There are heaps of XOOPS sites with porn on them of various persuasions, and many other sites/subjects that various groups of people would find offensive in one way or another.

If we are going to censor sites on the basis of 'moral standards' or some such thing, whose standards should we use? The story clearly indicated it was an adult site, and did not post any pictures on XOOPS.org.

Anyway, for what it is worth, I have posted the relevant part of the XOOPS Terms of Service below. I think the last para is particularly relevant!

Quote:
5. CONTENT

All information, data, text, software, music, sound, photographs, graphics, video, messages, or any other materials whatsoever (collectively, "Content"), whether publicly posted or privately transmitted, is the sole responsibility of the person from whom such Content originated. This means that the user, and not XOOPS, is entirely responsible for all Content that he or she uploads, posts, emails or otherwise transmits via the the XOOPS Sites. No user shall transmit Content or otherwise conduct or participate in any activities on the XOOPS Sites that, in the judgment of XOOPS, is likely to be prohibited by law in any applicable jurisdiction, including laws governing the encryption of software, the export of technology, the transmission of obscenity, or the permissible uses of intellectual property.

XOOPS reserves the right to refuse or delete any Content of which it becomes aware and reasonably deems not to fulfill the Purpose. In addition, XOOPS shall have the right (but not the obligation) in its sole discretion to refuse or delete any Content that it reasonably considers to violate the Terms or be otherwise illegal. XOOPS, in its sole and absolute discretion, may preserve Content and may also disclose Content if required to do so by law or judicial or governmental mandate or as reasonably determined useful by XOOPS to protect the rights, property, or personal safety of the XOOPS Sites' users and the public. XOOPS does not control the Content posted to the the XOOPS Sites and, as such, does not guarantee the accuracy, integrity or quality of such Content. Under no circumstances will XOOPS be liable in any way for any Content, including, but not limited to, liability for any errors or omissions in any Content or for any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of any Content posted, emailed or otherwise transmitted via the XOOPS Sites.

Each user, by using the XOOPS Sites, may be exposed to Content that is offensive, indecent or objectionable. Each user must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with the use of any Content, including any reliance on the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of such Content.

True, but at the same time, I don't know if XOOPS - or any site - is obligated to accept/post every item that gets posted. Particularly if the first thing to greet you when you visit the page are some very graphic animated gif images depicting anal and oral sex. A line's got to be drawn somewhere, I think.

I routinely access xoops.org from my computer at work. Since my job involves working with XOOPS, it would be very inconvenient if I were unable to do that.

If xoops.org started hosting links to "adult" sites, there's a good chance my company would start blocking my access to it.

MadFish: You're misusing the word "censorship". Censorship is when an outside party controls what you publish. That's not the case here.

By the way, the site in question wasn't just porn. It also has a "warez" section.

Ok if it has warez then a) it is clearly illegal and b) it clearly violates the terms of service, so by all means take the story down. But 'illegal' is a completely different issue.

If you have a search for 'adult' you will straight away find links to several sites on xoops.org that contain this kind of content (like 'games and babes' and 'bulgarian sex entertainment' and some 'santa claus' site that somebody actually complained about and nobody did anything). Will we remove those too?

I agree but where is the line and whose moral values are we going to impose? Are pictures of sex ok ? How about nudity? Topless women ? Topless men (now there's a cultural/value judgement!). Bikinis? Art sites? Photos of tribal people in traditional dress? Sex education?

'Illegal' is reasonably clear for some things, but for 'moral' stuff all you can do is impose your own values. You might think a photo of a woman in a knee length skirt is acceptable, but in many countries, it isn't.

So whose moral standard should we impose?

Personally I think we should leave it up to the individual. Nobody had to click on a link marked '[adult site]'!

Indeed sir you are

BornSlacker.com is an adult gaming website. The forte of our site is not "porn" it's gaming. However the group of guys that have made themeselves a home here are your typical guy and enjoy boobies just like every other warm blooded male in the world.

Hence when we find a picture of a nice looking young lady that we think is worth posting about we might, but it's in the "adult pictures" forum, not on the main page, or it's in the "articles" section marked as [NSFW], or in the gallery also marked as [NSFW].

I did have a Disclaimer Page at one point but it did more harm than good. I just try to keep "mostly" clothed women on the homepage and if you notice I provided a censored screenshot for those that browse from work like myself.

I think there is a big difference between my site and the porn site listed.
