The Mommy Link

Hi,

I just switched to XOOPS from a different cms, and I'm having trouble with my Google adsense ad. I have it in the footer section.

It's pulling in content-related ads just like it's supposed to on all the pages in my site EXCEPT for my main front page...I'm only getting the general public service ads there. Which would mean that their crawler isn't picking up anything on that page for some reason. The module I have set for my main page is the news module. I checked the robot.txt file to make sure it wasn't excluded (not sure if that applies to the adsense crawler or not anyway) and it isn't listed, so I know that's not the problem.

Any ideas on why the google adsense crawler wouldn't be able to pick up anything in that module? My site link is above.

Thanks!

Rachael

I just used the XOOPS banner system to display my Google Ads.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think using the banner system would solve my problem with the google crawler not recognizing the content of my front page.

The banner ad system is great ...and I am using it for my rotated ads in the header of my page. But, I didn't want the google ad to be rotated with the others. I wanted it at the bottom of all pages. I don't think the banner system with XOOPS allows you to pick and choose which banners you want in different locations...at least not that I could see anyway. That's why I just put the script in the footer....which works fine...except for my front page.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks,

Rachael

I had a similar problem with my Google ads and I even e-mailed Google about it and someone checked out my pages. Google didn't really seem to know. They said it might have been because their crawler, which decides which ads to dispay wasn't able to pick up on the text. Their advice was to ad more relevant text to the page ( in effect encouraging me to Spam the page with Keywords)

They seemed a bit unsure. The problem has now gone away on my site. I thing the Google system is still in development. Have you tried selecting the option. ' Ads are displayed on a framed page ' -. I am getting much more accurate ads using this option.

I think the Google system is flawed. You should just have the option of choosing the kind of Ads you want, like the Amazon affiliates system.

hello , yes i recall the frusterating days of Google ad implementation.

First: Thr front page you might notice (of most XOOPS powered sites) does not get crawled very intelligently by our crawlers out there. IF you want something to be picked up specifically for google ads...I would create a custom block...display somewhere...in that block have it be a "where am I?" type of block and describe your sites content.

This helped immensly with our site when we werre checking out what "spiders saw" on our site. We have taken the block away now because we dont have google ads on front page.

BTW-(you will notice that this site has a sort of welcome or site info block, top center) this helps with spiders and I think it would help with google ads if you want them on that page.

Ok, I've implemented both of your suggestions (rudycash and DobePhat). I'll give the crawler a chance to do its thing and we'll see what happens!

Thanks for the help!

Ok, several days and many tests later, I still have public service ads on my front page...all the other pages show content driven ads like they're supposed to.

Could it be because my front page is being redirected to? My previous CMS's index.php was located directly in my public_html folder. I have XOOPS installed in it's own folder and have a redirect set up from the old index.php to the new one. I don't see how this could be the problem because I would think the google crawler would go directly to the page that has the ad. But this is the only thing I could come up with that was different between my front page and the other pages of the site. Or...is there a better way to do the redirect?

Do you know why the front page isn't crawled intelligently? I tried adding a welcome block, but this hasn't worked either.

Everything else with XOOPS has been great..it's just this one thing that is bugging me.

Thanks!

Sorry, totally misunderstood your question when first reading it. I thought you were just looking for a way to display google ads, not trying to target their contents.

Very interesting topic as both myself and one of my friends has also been noticing a huge drop in releveant ads being displayed, and of course this is accompanied with a huge drop in revenue. My revenue raised this month from google ads is on target to be just 22% of what it was in my first month, and my friend is much the same and is on target for just 24% of what he started off with. Funny how they recently made changes to Adsense recently and now it seems there are XOOPS based (and possibly others, I don't know) sites that are now not getting relevant adds .

I haven't tried using the framed site setting, but I have been using a custom block since day one which outlines the details of my site. I also wrote to google just last week with my concerns regarding getting relevant ad feeds, and I seem to have gottena fairly generic sounding response saying pretty much as above in that google's crawlers are unable to find enough text based content. THing is I haven't changed a thing apart from adding a few news stories. My welcome block has been the same since I launced the site 6 months ago and when I first started using google adsense I never had any trouble getting relevant ads.

I'll try rewording my welcome block to include as many keywords as possible, but I'm not 100% that it'll do anything.

Hi Rachael

Just thought I'd paste a link to this thread just incase you hadn't seen it. I only did a quick scan on it, but it seems it might have a bit of relevant info regarding search engine optimization.

No, I didn't see that thread...there's definitely some good info there. Thanks for pointing it out! And I'm definitely going to give that new module a try that's mentioned in the last post...sounds like it might be a good one.

Thanks again, and if you come up with any other tricks with the Google ad...PLEASE let me know. I can be reached pretty easily through my site.

Thanks,
