OK, this is mildly strange. I found this image in the /xoops/html/images directory.

Resized Image

Looks like the button is there ready to be pushed, but there's no way to push it.

I just had someone sign up using a pornographic avatar then posting a pornographic piture on the forums.

I deleted the account, but would like to stop them signing up again or accessing the site.

What is the best way to go about this?

I'm unsure if I should block the ip as I don't want to accidently block other users. I got the ip from the who's online block, more link.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Dee

This is an ugly topic, in my own experience trying to create CMSs, effectively banning people is extremely difficult. For example, most of my visitors are using dailup service, which makes it impossible to ban them by IP address, as you'll just wind up intermittantly banning other people, I couldn't ban IP ranges without locking out huge parts of my user base. The best solution I ever came up with was to set cookies that make people banned, but anyone with a reasonable grasp of internet technology could get around that one.

Banning people is hard.

Ugly topic indeed, never ending job. If you have the time to approve regs then you should activate admin approval, not allow uploaded/linked avatars, and grab as much info as you can in the email sent.

IP isn't enough or useful for banning most of the time but you should keep it anyway and store the really bad boys away. You'll find that some of these clowns do it from an office and presenting that company with your evidence goes a long way.

I'd like to see email address banning (with wildcard) along with IP. Still not enough to keep away most trolls but it makes them work harder creating new addresses just to bug you.

Maybe even user tracking so that activity for a specific user can be easily extracted in a report for those times it could help.

Chasing abusers isn't even good sport anymore. Too much grief.

I too would like to see email address banning (with wildcard) along with IP.

Email address banning is already implemented.

You find it in System Admin > Preferences > User Info Settings.

Scroll to the bottom and you will see a textbox labeled "Enter emails that should not be used in user profile." There ya go, users will be unable to register using that email address.

As far as the IP being shown, I figured it out in my post here.

An interesting feature for comments and forum posts would be if privileges to include images could be set on group level. Of course it's a hazzle to go throug another step to give good users full functionality of the site.

Another very effective way to ban users based on IP is to set up firewall rules to drop everything from specific IP:s. Some "humans" are easy fooled that the website is down.

It would be interesting to have the ability to set a number of posts before a member can post images on the forum. Like the avatar part. Most likely you will know by the 25 or 50th post if a member will be trouble.

Man I hate trolls/spammers/idiots, as if running a site isn't enough work. To the original poster, if they post child porn don't even screw around - the FBI or your local law enforcement will take it from there (if you're in the US, I'm a criminal justice/information security student at RIT here in Rochester NY, and I've brought that topic up to one of my professors before - an idiot posting like that can be like a gift). As for IP addresses in 2.0 - I've seen them in the forums module, they are in a little drop down type deal (if you are logged in as admin). That helps, but another useful tool is your stats program. I use AWStats, and that can be very useful to track them, then just start digging using IPWhois, NSLookup, and out of neccessity - nmap (if you can). I would like to block these people by a combination of MAC address, IP Address, and system configuration, but i'm sure there are some huge drawbacks to that otherwise it would be popular. Other than that, just keep plugging away, have a zero tolerance policy, and try to get a few moderators to lay down the law.
