templates not skins? Need help on differance please

As i understand it
installing a template is different then installing a theme or skin right?

Im not to savvy on the info about it yet so maybe someone can tell me what is the difference when using a template?
Even a link to the proper info would be good.

Thanks very much.
Ill continue to ask questions in this thread however so's not to create too many redundant threads in the section about the same topic

Theme:
The overall "look" of your site is a web-browser. Controlled by theme.html, .css files and images. Changes to these files act upon your whole site.

Templates:
Come with modules and control how information from the database is displayed. Look in your /module/module-name/templates and /modules/module-name/templates/blocks folders.

does that mean a Template has more basic functionality?

Also. I have a Template downloaded
Is there a XOOPS version restriction ( non compatibility ) for using templates?

Im using XOOPS 2.0.18.1

in the meantime im going to look in those folders you mentioned of the downloaded template.
Thanks JAV

...just looked in there but
the only thing in the MODULES folder is
XOOPS_ROOT\modules\system

Templates determine the layout of (mosttimes repeating) elements in a site layout. These elements could be bloacks as found in the left and right columns, or the block formed by this single post.
Templates assume a module or XOOPS version they were developed and tested on, but most basic functionalities don't change or stay compatible. So, most templates run on most XOOPS versions.
However if some new functionality is added to a module, then some older templates may have to be modified to add these new possibilities. This is also the case for themes.
The newer XOOPS version supports beneath the left and right column also divisions for the center column as the center left, center center and center right columns for top and bottom in the centercolumn. To make use of these positions, many older themes have to be adapted.

Looks like you haven't installed any modules yet... JAVesey's comment about Templates assumes you have some modules installed.
