Good morning. I think it’s better not to log off because all day the last week I am in Xoops! 

Ok here is what I want to do.

I want to create variable categories of news. For example 1) Althletics 2) Technology etc.

I use news module but the problem is that I want to appear “Athletics” for example at different block at different places from Technology and now I have to put them all in one.

To give you an example of what I want see here http://www.zortal.gr/modules/news/

Did you understand what I want?

I have the same problem with rss. I want different blocks for different rss.
Greece.

An oldie but goodie.

Topics Blocks

There have been many incarnations of this amd some recent article management modules feature this kind of built in. But its still a useful module, IMO. Very very simple to use, you just select the topic id (from the news cat.) and it pulls the latest from it...just like a "recent list"

If you want full article summary..you might just keep messing wiht latest news mod. A lot to experiment and configure within there, still.

For rss, I'd go with XHLD
For headlines its useful you can install more than once, easily rename and manage, and all templates are easily modified. The trick with this one is familiarizing your self with its varied block configs.

We use them on our site (in profile) to much success and its not even the latest.

Check here for most current version at the authors site
At PEAK

Hope that helps at least get you going.

i try to add my first rss and it gives me the following mistake

Failed saving data to database for headline ellak
XmlParse error: not well-formed (invalid token) at line 126
Greece.

hmm well it should work, actually The version we are using is 2.99 but the others should work. Im trying to remember if there is anything (such as an extension) that needs to be opened in php itself, check documentation.

Check permissions etc.

Also, find the most generic news feed to test first. (like a yahoo news feed or something).Sometimes some feeds are not fetchable based on config.

OMG!
I am gonna smash my pc :)
ok finally it worked but..only for english characters.

The problem was that i had to allow HTML into the rss (it has an option)

Here is what i figure. If i put a Greek rss and choose ISO-8859-1 as encoding it appears the rss. Wrong but they appear!

If i choose auto detection it returns the same mistake as i said to the previous message!

So something is wrong with the ability to appear Greek characters (UTF-8).

PS: By the way if we finally manage to solve the encoding problem is there a way to create categories for my rss?

example "News from Technology", "politics" you know :)
Greece.
