Bot protection in registration

I've been getting a lot of bots lately registering on the sites.

I block their email domains, but they use another (usually .info addresses). Is there anyway I can add more protection to prevent bots from signing up to my websites?

It's already got email activation, but obviously, they can get around that until they use a different domain, and they spam so much crap within the space of a few minutes, that it takes me hours just to remove it.

Suggestions would be great.

For protection against bots you can use a captcha hack, which will prevent bots from registering. I have seen a few sites who use this, probably you can find some more information about this hack using google or this site's search feature.

Here you can find a Hack for the 2.0.16. All you need ist the framework from cbb3.08

Captcha is probably more effective, but if you don't want to have that additional threshold for legit people and still weed out most of the trash, consider also the Netquery Module for Bad Behavior. Good idea anyway to put up some shields against rogue crawlers and bots before they even find where to spam you.

Followed the instructions on adding captcha and got blank page on registration page.

What gives?

Not sure (yet) if it is related, but I was getting registrations on my wordpress MU site that were creating splogs (spam blogs). I also added the captcha to the registration page of the wordpress MU site, averaged 5 to 9 new splogs a day. Fought it for a few months then deleted the site.

I would think that it would then be a regular person creating the blogs after I added the captcha, but the pattern was still the same as before. Seems a waste of time for a person to create so many just to be deleted in the few hours I did not see it. Smart bots? or what?

Some bots have been created that can bypass captcha, unfortunately. Usually these bots are also exploiting a security flaw found in the registration script.

If bots are able to register with XOOPS sites then surely that makes the http-refferer check obsolete (btw im not a security expert, just asking).
