Hi fellow XOOPS users. I'm looking for a news module that is able to differentiate between different groups of users.

I have different news categories and I would like to provide access to these categories based on username or groupmembership.

Is there a module that is able to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Downloads and support for News 1.5 in English is here.

The previous version of News (1.44) also supports category-based group permissions. You can download it here in the module repository.

You'll find plenty of posts in the forums about using News which is a popular and reliable module.

Hi,

I just installed News 1.44 and tried to configure the permissions for the module.

There are three categories: approve, submit and view news. What I see is when I set the permissions in one categorie it clears the permissions for the other two categories.

Is this a known problem?

Thanks in advance.

Actually the latest release of News can be found on the News pages of this site - and its 1.53.

I know, but won't that add a lot of new features I don't realy need? Can I use that module with XOOPS 2.0.5?

I'm not that familiar yet with Xoops.

It's not a good idea to use older versions of modules, as they may have problems corrected with later versions.

Also - using 2.0.5 is definately not a good idea, as many security problems have been fixed since it has been released.

I would strongly recomend a backup of your site and database as soon as you can... and that you then look towards updating to 2.0.10 .. and then upwards to 2.0.16.

That's the correct procedure. You choose a permission type from the dd menu (approve, submit view), then press the submit button after setting the checkboxes.

If this fails, (and all your folder permissions are correct) I would think it is a compatibility problem with your version of Xoops, or PHP or MySQL. As davidl2 suggests, try upgrading to XOOPS 2.0.16 and see if the latest News module works properly.

Thanks a lot for your help.

I've updated the news module to 1.51 and then to 1.53, but still had the same problem. Then I removed the news module and installed 1.53 fresh. After that the permissions work.

I'll check with my provider to see if it's possible to upgrade the version of XOOPS since it is a service they provide.
