in your-server-root/htdocs/modules/newbb/templates, all are there, from Administration/Templates, clone them and feel free to modify.

You can edit a lot in your theme's stylesheet (style.css)

I simply modify from modules/newbb/template/newbb_index.htm,
but its doesn't take any effect...

If you want to modify the template that way you will have to clone the default template set and rename the template set. You can do this via admin/system/templates.

After you clone them go into your preferences/general settings and make the new one (one you just named) the new default template set, click go.

Then go back to the admin/system/templates and edit the particular file you want in the newbb templates of your newly cloned template set.

But you can also do a lot with the css file too as mentioned earlier.

I am not sure what exactly it is you want. I am not certain but I believe that class cycles/alternates the classes of .even and .odd, so you would have to play around with the css to tweak things the way you want. If you didn't want to use that class then you could just change it I suppose. Depends on what you want to do.

Have fun.
