Why Xoops is better than MAMBO

ok, after 2 hours, i have made no progress on deciding whether i should use XOOPS or mambo.

i havent seen much on this forum comparing the two, and i want something specific

Can anyone provide a list of features that xoops=o has, BUT IS NOT AVAILABLE IN MAMBO??

Xoops is free and that says a lot about the philosophy of the XOOPS project.


I guess both are very good.


The variety is good for the developement.

Who knows if a blue anges could buyout both and make one only software??

You cant really compare XOOPS and Mambo.
Mambo isnt exactly intended as a Community Based.
XOOPS is way more community intended.

It really comes down to what you want to do.

Features XOOPS has and mambo doesn't:

-user groups. mambo only allows for 3 groups, anonymous, registered and special. XOOPS allows you to setup as many as you like.

I have used both XOOPS and Mambo to build websites and I can tell you now that given a choice I would choose Xoops. Simply put, Mambo is a bitch to figure out when you are new to CMS's. Mambo is designed professionally so you have to have some idea about what you indend to do, whereas XOOPS has the flexibility to be whatever you want it to be.

To test Mambo I created a test install and I played with various compnents and modules and it looked nice but it didn't feel right. Its got some nice features that I would love to seen in XOOPS but I like the customisation of Xoops. Themes are important to me, and Mambo's themes are pretty grey when it comes to looking snappy and eye-catching.

Yes, I've trid making my own themes to no avail. Its just too complicated at my current level of design.

If you still can't make up your mind, set aside and evening and install Mambo, add a few components and modules, have a poke in its guts and then decide what you will do.

People will probably disagree with what I have said here but, its down to personal preference really, and I found XOOPS my preference.

Well, there are good themes for Mambo (more, than for XOOPS - in my eyes), but, besides this fact - maintaing Mambo site is harder, and every minor update is really big, [size=x-large]big[/size] headache for webmaster - Mambo ignores backward-compablity and you (as webmaster of Mambo-site) have
- wait for new component, module, theme for your current version
get it
- install

Yeah, XOOPS looks so much more secure than Mambo.
But, keep this in mind.
XOOPS is much smaller than Mambo in terms of amount of people using it.

Its not as worth targeting XOOPS as Mambo.
Its like the situation Microsoft is in. They have 90% of market, they are more than 90% targeted by hackers.

I work with Mambo on occassion and keep my fingers in it regularlly. Mambo is a fantastic CMS IMHO, but for the average Joe, XOOPS is definately the better choice.

There are more free modules for XOOPS than Mambo
XOOPS is easier to learn
XOOPS is easier to code modules for
XOOPS is easier to code themes for
XOOPS is easier to administrate

You can add some things to that:
XOOPS has a cntral site so that it's easier to find stuff
XOOPS is friendlier to upgrade
XOOPS is only one syllable
XOOPS is more "idiot-proof" in general


And of course, then there's personal preference. I, personally, can't stand mambo's system for themes and its administration enviroment keeps me awake at night for fear of nightmares. If I were forced to make a site that used mambo, I could do it, but it would take forever. Mambo is not the way that I think. XOOPS is exactly the way a cms should be, to me.

Before choosing one or the other, try to do a site in both and then compare how things worked out. It's more time consuming than reading a review, but there is no better teacher than experience.
