Hosting and how to get traffic from China

Hi,

This is a question about a problem for anyone who is hoping their site will get viewers in China

I have tried hosting my website in China but I have had to transfer to the US (bluehost) because host companies in China are just too limited (no permission to use htaccess, no permission to alter php.ini, very little space and so on).

But for anyone who wants their website to be found by Chinese internet users, you must figure in Baidu.com search results (Google comes a poor second). However Baidu gives huge preference to websites hosted in China. If your site is not hosted in China you will not figure well in their search and will never get good viewing figures from the world's biggest market.

I've come to the conclusion my site must be hosted outside of China for the performance of the site but I must have a DNS located in China for the sake of traffic.

Can anyone tell me if there is a possible solution to this as I'm not an expert on the technicalities of hosting.

In my case my site has a Chinese version which is hosted as a subdomain of my url.

Is it possible to have a subdomain registered with a DNS/host located in China and yet for that to just act as a mirror (not sure if that is the right word) that will access my files and database from the server in the US.

In other words, is there any way I can have a Chinese DNS/host which simply loads pages from a server in the USA.

Hope this makes sense. It may seem like a fairly random question but I think it has relevance for anyone interested in the China market, even if you site has no Chinese version. By the way, I'm not talking about the problem of site's hosted outside China being blocked for viewers inside the country.

Thanks an awful lot for any suggestions!!!

Can anyone advise me on how to add a count and pagination to the main XOOPS search?

So for the main search of the website, I would like results to show total number of results and to have pagination (rather than just next and previous).

Thanks a lot

IIS server can't use htaccess - how can I rewrite URL's

Hi there

My server host tells me that as my server is IIS it cannot use rewrite and htaccess files.

Firstly, is that correct and secondly if so how can I rewrite my URL's to make them more search engine friendly?

The host tells me it should be possible to achieve the same results as htacess rewrite by using ordinary programming but they can't tell me how.

Can anyone help me change this:

www.website/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topicid=635&forum_id=8

to like this

www.website/fashion/help/how-to-tie-a-tie.html

Without using htaccess?

Thank you very much!

Hi avtx30

I asked my webhost about updating packages and they say

You were not update via RMP package. You should download a higher RPM package and install it.
You installed by source code so you should compiler the database first, then you can do the update.

Does this make sense to you?

thanks again!
