Karen, I am having sa somewhat similar problem with my site. I have been working around it by using the url

(sitename)/modules/system/admin.php

to get to my system admin menuu

and similar format for my modules (exact structure varies from module to module)

I changed the permissions on the cache folder and still am getting the same page.

Oh well, at least I have gained some insight into how all those mysterious php files relate to each other (you'll guess I am no coder!).

I looked through the admin.php file and found it referred to a file called mainpage.php, which defines how the XOOPS site is structured.

My site is hosted at bluehost.com, which allows you to add up to 5 subdomains. I suspec this problem may have begun when I added a subdomain and a folder was automatically added to my /public_html directory. It is possible that something may have been overwritten in the XOOPS installation and that mainpage.php is pointing to the wrong place now. It is not as simple as removing the added folder - I tried that already.

I will contact support at bluehost and maybe they can help me.

Hmm. I assume you mean the cache folder in the public_html directory?

I don't see a file admin_menu.php there - perhapss the problem is that it is not being generated.

I forgot to mention above tthat if I respond "submit" to the prompt it takes me to a blank page.

The permissions on the cache folder are currently drwxr-xr-x

Of course this happened just as I was setting up a backup...

Anyway, instead of admin.php taking me to the menu, I get a page
saying

"This is your first time to enter the administration section. Press the button below to proceed."

With two buttons, submit and cancel.

I can get around this by going to module/system/admin.php

but it is inconvenient and at the same time not all my modules are appearing.

Obviously something got corrupted but I have no idea what. So far, I have reloaded admin.php from the original program download.

Where should I go next?

John V, yes, I did do turn updating on. However, I have orange, I mean green, on my face.

Although I cleared my history and refreshed my browser, apparently the pages were not updating.

This morning my headings came up... green!!!!

The key seems to have been editing all the cloned blocks the same way.

Now on to the next problem, changing the heading of the other articles in the topic. But now I have faith that editing the template will produce results!

John V,

Your response made sense - I changed the color - in every single news block...

and there it still is! That orange!

I thought perhaps my difficulty controlling it has to do with the fact that I have cloned the block - is there some ubercontroller template for the news module that is overriding my changes?

The funny thing is, I do love orange, just not in this particular instance!

I did edit the theme to get the headings on the sections (using Dreamweaver). It is the headlines within the news module that I have gotten stuck on.

I will look into the style.css file to see if I can figure out what controls the headlines.

I like the XOOPS format because it prevents me from trying to be too much of a designer so I can focus on content & community. Still, where design fosters usability, that's critical!

Thanks, Jeff.

I am very proud of the fact that I went from zero to a site in under 60 days that is more or less what I had envisioned... with only HTML knowledge, no coding, and no CMS experience.

But now I want more.

Here is what I have:

http://www.theinsidepoop.org

I cloned the news module block to create the different topics, using a tutorial on this site. I edited my template to get the topic headers. The spotlight feature works well to highlight the top story, but

a) orange text... not so much.

b) I'd like to make the headlines of the other stories bold and color too to help people see them.

I am not sure where to modify the template - through blocks? - or what part to modify to make these tweaks.
