How Do I Use Variables In Blocks?!?

I'd like to make a small block that shows the users name and access level on my site... such as...

welcome (USERNAME HERE), You are a user with (ACCESS LEVEL HERE) access to the site. blah blah blah blah blah.

Tried {X_uname} etc... no luck with html or autoformat setting.

CBB (.head) tag...

When using the blocks 'recent posts' etc on my site... there are references to a 'head' class in the block... my .head in the site style is for transparent background, black text. but the text appears as white (invisible on my white background)

how do I fix this?!?

Does the bbchen counter module in the repository work with 2.2.2 for anyone?

It appears for me, permissions are correct, but counter doesn't count...

I tried in the theme.html and got nothing. tried in both head and body tags
