I have put it in the document root directory (which should be public_html usually).

If you've named the file LOCAL_XXXXX.XML (all caps lock) instead of local_xxxxx.xml that may be a problem as well since GNU/Linux systems (which your server is hosted on most likely) are case sensitive.

Alright people, I've solved this, in great part thanks to birdseeds instructions above, but with little modifications that suit this specific case (text-link-ads block).

I replaced "mycontent" and "myblock" occurences above with "textlinkads" and instead of this:

$block['mycontent'] = 'I need the result of textlinkads.php here!';

we naturally have this:

$block['textlinkads'] = file_get_contents(XOOPS_URL '/textlinkads.php');

To hopefully make things easier for others who want to implement text-link-ads.com code in their XOOPS site, I've created a package which includes all files already created/modified except textlinkads.php which you'll have to create with the code you got from text-link-ads.com. Read the "README" file for steps to install.

Here is it:http://www.libervis.com/docs/textlinkads_xoops_block.tar.gz

Cheers

OK, I'm trying with the custom block as said by birdseed.

The problem is that it's not just some text or html that I need to insert here. It's the whole text-link-ads code which I've put in a separate file textlinkads.php.

Now I just want to have the result of execution of that file be displayed as the content of this block.

$block['mycontent'] = 'I need the result of textlinkads.php here!';

I've tried this:

$block['mycontent'] = include('textlinkads.php');

but that's apparently incorrect and I'm no php guru. At least it should give you an idea of what I'd like to achieve. I know there's a way and some of you know it.

Thanks

Eh this already got my eyebrow raised, until the last post.

Sticking with 2.2.4 here too.. even if in stitches.

And waiting with hope for 2.4!

Wait a sec there.. For what version do the above instructions apply?

As far as I know you can create a custom block from XOOPS block admin interface and select "PHP Script" as content type. That's what I did, but it doesn't work so far. It shows nothing.

I am using XOOPS 2.2.4 and I need to implement text-link-ads ASAP.

Thanks

Well said. That's probably the case with most of us who are currently using 2.2.x. It was originally touted as the new stable next generation XOOPS and we fell for it. When it turned out that it was a failure because of too many problems we were already hooked pretty deep to it, and here we are.

I'm not a coder so I can't be the judge of the code, so you might be right McNaz.

It's just the "end user" perception maybe, which may or may not always be correct. I personally don't like Joomla that much, but I use drupal on another site and it really shines in some ways, especially regarding extensibility. For example, the ability to put php snippets into any page using the onboard submission feature and also the ability to override core and module functions in a theme's template.php file are just awesome features. I also like it's built in support of clean URL's with the title of the page being in the URL itself (which carries alot of SEO weight).

On the other hand, Drupal does require a bit of know-how to run optimally (or even near optimally) so in that regard (ease of use) XOOPS probably wins.

Maybe 2 years will be more realistic ...

That would be a bit too much to wait and be stuck with 2.2.4 for the whole time, except if you suggest switching back to 2.0.14 and following from that.

I do hope it'll be much sooner though. If we are to wait two years for it I don't think XOOPS really has all that much of a future anyway. In some ways it already lacks behind the likes of Drupal and Joomla, and if it takes that long it could end up eating their dust behind..

Anyway, I think I'm persuaded to stick to 2.2.4 for now and count on some support from others who decided the same. I am giving XOOPS a second chance.

Cheers
Daniel
