i think the shorturls hack is what you maybe looking for, you'll have to search as i can't remember the links for it, but it's on the forum somewhere if u search..

ShortURL helps a bit. The higher the PR of your site, the higher the chance that Google will deep crawl your site. So-called "friendly" URLs have no effect on deep crawling your site. Google has a complex ranking system. Links and Contents have been "identified" as the most effective ways of increasing your PR.

As of mystery of "?" in the URL, here is a quote from Daniel Dulitz of Google:
Quote:

"So the mere presence of a question mark in the URL doesn't throw us for a loop at all. We will crawl those pages more slowly than we do with pages without question marks in the URL. Purely because they've identified themselves as being dynamic and we certainly don't want to bring anyone's site down because we're hitting the database too hard."

BTW, anyone who wants to give ShortURL a try, can find several TIPs and the package from Xoops Tips

If I were to start a new server, I would defintely go for FreeBSD.

As of Ensim equivalent, take a look at vdeck for BSD systems

Not sure if it would help, but, you may want to check MySQL write permission to temp directory.

Your host company might have switched the PHP without telling you. It is not a good business practice. They should at least tell their customers on the switch, or better yet, offer both 4 version and 5 version , so customers can choose which one to use.

You are running PHP5, not 4.38.

Search the forums for PHP5, you will find your answers.

As pointed it out already - make sure you have the correct db settings.
Nobody can help you further on that regard. If you forgot, check with your host.

I downloaded the update patch 2.0.6 to 2.0.7 and FTP'd it to my server, I the went to upgrade and when I go to my site now, I get the following error:

Hope you still have a good backup file. Upgrading from 2.0.6 to 2.0.7 only needs overwriting the files and UPDATing the system module if there are changes to the template files. That is all and the instruction is pretty clear.

It seems that you have gone through the install process again which are not required.

If you had to re-install, make sure you have the correct db name and password, as Tom has already pointed out.

BTW, remove your install directory once you are done. You are asking for hacking to your site by leaving it there.

You may want to check with your host to see if they can make changes to DNS record to point to new domain. If they can do that, you won't need a webspace for re-direct.

If you are focusing on UK only, lost-doggies.co.uk is a much better domain name for the purpose (my personal opinion, of course ). If you agree, again check with your host to see if you could switch without incurring any cost. It would not be difficult to make your current XOOPS site using the old domain name.

Good luck.
