How does it look if you try a different theme? Not telling you to change your theme, but does it look as you expect it would or the same? Just something you can test, might give you an idea.
For time zone settings go to Admin >>> System >>> Preferences
You will see two drop down lists that you can adjust
Server timezone*
Default timezone
See if that makes a difference. When people sign up to your site they can also pick what time zone they are in as can you.

Just out of interest did you update the Article module, does it show it to be version 1.0, regardless update it if you haven't. It's the only thing I can suggest. Do you have a screen shot or a link to your site so we can see what you mean exactly. My spotlight block looks fine as far as I can see is all.

I was in the same situation as you are, I did what you want to do and it worked, I did not lose any data. It's not to say that your experience will go as smoothly as mine, I did mine a long time ago now, so it was worth doing, you never know Article 2.0 may just be around the corner, so is it worth taking the risk, I see it as a minor risk but you may not?
It's essentially the same as having your site hacked, break, host loses all data etc., though if you have a recent back up, quite often the effects are minimal (hopefully your host does regular back ups, most suggest you do your own as well though)

I certainly understand, I would like that as well, but not every module I use has a RSSFit plugin or has them in backend.php or at least didn't, I admit I haven't looked lately though, with planet I can aggregate every module that has RSS, I just put the xml address of the category which has all the Site wide RSS feeds in the header of the theme (replace the backend.php link) like so
