seems odd to me as well. I looked at 2.0.5.1 - the only file in newbb mod that is touched is the /include/forumforminc.php - this file is not part of the hack so it should work without fail.

were you able to get the preferences and the edit private forums forms to work in the admin interface??

The code changes involved in this module include extensive mods to the SQL as well as the php code. You can upgrade in place but at the minimum you need to "update" the module.

The uninstall and install simply facilitates the creation of the new table (update does not do that).

There are edit private form form changes and new module preferences. I will look at 2.0.5.1 tomorrow and see what needs touched.

Donna,

I hope that you were not working on your live site. I went there this morning and had a good time reading through some of the posts and weblogs. Really a neat site.

I've never understood why there isn't a preference for the forum module as to how to display forum topics.

It seems to me, this shouldn't be a choice that is made for comments and forums in the same place.

On the other hand, it would be really cool and exciting if the core developers could build a way for a module to "register" a user setting so that it would automatically inhabit the user profile form.

This is simple. Cache files are created by the login that your http server uses. In the case of most *nix systems, this is nobobdy. This is why you must alter the permissions on the cache files and directories for XOOPS to write out properly.

Of course, as the "owner" of the directory, you still have the ability to do anything you want with the file.

Xoops caches some "menu" files based on which modules you have activated. It does this by dynamically writing to these files. This is usually done to increase performance for commonly used files, and to reduce database server overhead.

It is a valid question. The more you understand the way that XOOPS thinks, the easier it will be to troubleshoot when needed.

Cheers,

Thanks. If there is anything that I can do to help, let me know. I will be very happy to stop maintaining this hack with each release.

Just remember to document that there are potential performance considerations when the

Quote:
Hide private forums from users without permission

is used. The sql used some outer joins, and for sites with large forums and many groups, this could be problematic.

I have published the 2.0.5 version of this hack Here

Please let me know if there are any problems.

I haven't integrated changes for 2.0.5.1 yet. Based on a review of the changes, there won't be any, but I haven't taken the time to run a diff yet.

Back in the day, I published a hack for the forums that did exactly what you said it should, and some more. I have kept it current for my own use, and published current versions on my site up through 2.0.4.

This hack allows you to control the permissions behavior of the newbb forum with regard to private forums and visibility through index pages, blocks and searches.

Activity has died down, and I never published a version for 2.0.5, but I will if you are interested.

Check it out on The Regenerate Web

Lemme know here or there if you want the updated hack.

This works well on a one off "hack" or module basis. It would be really cool if the mailer service could support "themed" html e-mail. Even, the mail templates that are part of modules and the system could be enhanced to include some of the properties of a theme.

The mail templates are language specific, and the themes are not.

I've been running up against the same bias. While the basic features of XOOPS are strong and I really like this tool, some of the features are less suited to the ministries and non-profit organizations that I work with the most.

I think that with XOOPS 2.0 that much of this can be edited in templates of each module, and saved as a base template set. Still the posting forms are less maleable.

Also, as features are added to the core (i.e. templates, notifications), simply wrapping a script or module from a different cms does not adequately integrate it with a site for most sophisticated organizations.

--
When the decision was made to separate the templates from the themes back in January, there should have been some thought to having the modules ship with some alternate templates.

I've just grown accustomed to hacking modules and the core until it does what I want. Unfortunately this makes it much more time consuming to take a release.

Cheers,

Rich

I have been using Always Web Hosting for about 1 year for my personal site, and for several ministry sites that I support.

Since I have experience with sites on different servers, I can share that some servers are more "exhausted" than others, and he uses a shared MySQL host (separate from the web server boxes).

Web packages are relatively cheap: <$30 month for 2GB storage/30Gb bandwidth and unlimited everything.

They have been very responsive both by e-mail and IM (even phone) when I have had problems. Most frequent issue is DNS for subdomains getting confused. (happened twice in 1 year).

-- Also had good experience with Christian Web Host
-- moved away because I needed more space for audio content.
their service and support were better than AWH, but the packages were smaller (300MB) and limited subdomains and databases.

Friends have had good success with Host Rocket
I have not deployed any sites there yet, but they will be my next choice for a move.

Cheers,
