Hi

I am currently looking at tring to develop actions that fit with Freeway Pro. Freeway Pro is a wysiwyg type editor.

It currently has actions that enable you to look at the code generated and then add php or smarty tags. In fact any tags you want. I thought what a cool way to be able to develop a theme.

However, I have taken the idea on one step and wondered whether it might be possible to generate this sort of tag generation in other ways as well.

Any thoughts and any Mac folks interested.

Hi

I wasn't sure where to post this, so I put it here. Hopefully if it is wrong someone will send it where it should be sent!!!

Anyway, I was thinking would it be the time to start thinking about putting together a XOOPS manual? What I mean is the sort of books that Riley produce in the dummies and bible series.

I am not sure of content and I am fairly sure that within one day of publishing the book would be out of date! But I am sure that there is enough static content for this to be a very exciting project. If the book was a group project with all members being volunteers and the faq content being used ot produce the book, all profits could go directly to XOOPS funds.

The book could be sold with installation disks and extra theme/modules included.

I reckon this could be a very exciting project and I would gladly be involved or even if you wish co-ordinate such a book.

Is this a possible idea?

Thanks.

Rich

Hi

I am beginning to look at understanding how to fully protect the site. And so I went to the faq to look for information on file protection. When I set the site up I had to chmod to 777 for all files which I duly did and then after installation removed the installation directory and chmod one file to 444. Is this ok or should I chmod all files to 444?

For your information under this url:-

https://xoops.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=82

we get this comment:-

There are several basic steps outlined elsewhere in these FAQs, such as correct use of file/folder permissions, htaccess, index redirects, rejection of uploading unsafe mime-types and regular backups. It is also good policy to use your groups system to filter users, allowing extended priviledges only to trusted members.

Would it be possible to put a link to the various answers that are raised?

Thanks

Rich

Hi

I thought I had read somewhere how to hack the news module so that the 'submit news', 'archive news' didn't display but I can't find it anywhere!

Can someone please tell me which part of the template I hack so that these items do not show in the main menu!

Thanks

Rich

P.S. I hope everybody had happy holidays.

Hi

I really like where Jenny and JMorris have taken this.

The next question is who and how does it get done?

Surely this sort of work could easily get lost in the amount of posting!?!

I applied to help in terms of docs and community relations but I reckon if JMorris wants to put a team together, I gladly help!

Any thoughts on applying the knowledge learnt?

Rich

Hi

Just picked up on the threads of this after recording a guitar track!

I reckon the thread is going in the right direction. A sort of we have to try to simplify but equally this is complicated business and over simplifying won't happen.

It would be interesting to take a poll on newbies to see how each got on. At the end of the day, I'm a newbie with some experience and I coped!

Maybe the original post is not possible!

Could we look at twin sites. www.newbie.xoops.org which users can post everything and anything to. Posts will be harvested once a month. Anything useful gleaned, the rest binned! I would be happy to help implement such a project!

Any thoughts.

Hi Carnuke

No I do think it is clear enough. I think the problem for me was information overload. That is why I was suggesting a two level approach.

Maybe you could set a 'Just Joined' level. They could be taken to those two sections and have a few moderators to those list.

You could then offer an upgrade to the full forums with a suggestion on how to use.

I would like to ponder why I now use the search facility with confidence. I am now starting to pick out the answers I need!

I think it might just be confidence with XOOPS and an understanding of how the whole XOOPS thing works.

Maybe you won't be able to get rid of those panic questions!

Hi

I thought I would add a few comments.

I have only been using XOOPS for a relatively short time and found on first use of this site that:-

1. Yes I did panic
2. There seemed to be too much info

Maybe you could have two levels of site management? A sort of newbie site. i.e. For folks like myself who have posted less than 50/100 comments we log in and go straight to a cut down version of the forum.

At this site newbies could just ask any questions they wanted and we could direct them to the correct answer using urls.

Come to think of it, that probably is just adding too much work. However, I am starting to get more confident in the use of XOOPS and have started to read quite a few of the posts on the forums and will try to answer as many as I can!

I am now finding that I have the confidence to look for the answers and not get blatted by the amount of info available.

I don't think this probably helps much but I will gladly chat further about the experiences of being a newbie!!!

Enjoy Christmas and have a hangover free new year!

With love

Rich
