This would be the ideal setup.

Post a forum message in the News category.
News module picks it up and displays it.
Comments are automatically added to the forum message.

Everything is neat and tidy. No comments module AND forum module. No having to post news AND re-post a forum topic. All of the tools for posting and replying are available. One editor can be used for both that has a full suite of options.

The next step is to integrate the image management system as well so that images are stored in one place and available to ALL modules.

Modules need to SHARE data from their tables rather than reinvent the wheel over and over. Please.

Rather than expanding the comments, I'd rather see comment integrated into the Forums.

Create a NEWS forum and every news item automatically creates a thread there for comments. And all comments in that thread are displayed under the news item. Seamless integration. Easy to quote. Can use all of the forum features. Elegant.

Creating a comments module that is separate from the forum module is several steps backwards. IMNSHO of course.

Xoops needs integration and seamless access to data between modules. News, forums, image handling, file handling, tags, quotes, avatars.... They all need to access one another rather than the current situation where you need to hack things to make pieces of data available to other modules.

Let's move forward, not backwards.

86 views so far and no responses.

I have to assume that this module is abandoned then. That's a real shame.

This is also the largest problem I have with Xoops. People come up with great modules but never follow through and maintain them making them dangerous to continue using. Don't take this wrong, I'm not pointing fingers and complaining. If it was important enough for me, I'd learn to program and involve myself more. It's just frustrating to see good modules developed and then abandoned...over and over and over and over again.

Maybe modules need expiration dates? That way both users and developers could clearly see what modules are being used based on the questions in the forums about "expired" modules. They can gauge interest based on the number of posts. They can determine whether it's worth maintaining or downloading or whether there is a better alternative. Most importantly, it would keep people talking about them and thinking about them.

Now to find an alternative to Mediawiki....

Mediawiki for Xoops Abandoned???

I haven't seen any updates to this module in ages. Mediawiki has been updated. Are there any security risks running the old XOOPS Mediawiki? Will this module ever be maintained and updated regularly?

Thanks in advance!

A poetry website would definitely benefit from a points/reputation system. Used in conjunction with posting points, you could track the poems that are really good as well as the poets. I think that's an ideal use of this.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you implement!

First, either a ranking system has a real useful purpose that gives relevant feedback to all users or don't bother wasting time coding it. IMNSHO....

vbulletin has implemented a really strong reputation system. I'd recommend reading through the comments on it to see the positives and negatives. They've learned a lot from the feedback. It's interesting to read the comments from admins of all types of sites about what worked, what didn't and why.

I like users being able to reward good comments/posts.

I like limiting the number of times users can reward to prevent spamming or stacking the deck.

I like older users or users with higher reputation or users that rarely give reputation automatically giving more per reward.

I think negative reputation by users can be abused for many groups. I tend to have small groups of friends for my sites so negative rep is useful for us to weed out bad ideas, but in larger groups it tends to be used to attack people rather than comment on ideas which makes me hesitant to ask for negative rewards for users. Admins definitely need to be able to remove rewards though.

It would be nice if rewards could work in conjunction with or even replace the current XOOPS user ranks system which is primarily based on number of posts. Ideally, this system would tie directly into that and be implemented at core level to be available to all modules or current ranks would be removed from core and implemented as a module/plug-in setup like you propose.

It would be interesting to be able to "clone" or create multiple rewards/ranks to allow people to advance along multiple pathways. A simple example would help: let's say the site created ranks for Support, Development and Creativity. Support would gain rewards mainly from posts and would be granted by users for useful comments, troubleshooting, advice, etc. Development would gain rewards mainly from news stories and would be granted by moderators for new modules, bug fixes, code suggestions, etc. Creativity would gain rewards mainly from posts and would be granted by users for providing ideas, constructive criticism, etc. Splitting into three different reward structures allows users and admins to quickly and easily see what areas different users excel in. This way users can quickly see for instance that Trabis has a really strong Dev and Creativity ranking just by looking at his profile or "badges" under his avatar. When Trabis comments on module development, new users would be able to very quickly compare between Trabis and Speed to know which one has a strong reputation and probably knows what they are talking about since Speed would have no Dev rank whatsoever but might have a reasonable Creative rank. :)

If you have one blanket reputation/rank/reward category for everyone, you have no way to really judge whether a person has broad or focused knowledge which makes their rank pretty much irrelevant except as a measure of favoritism which in my not so humble opinion is useless. If everyone is lumped into the same pool, we can't tell why they are highly ranked.

+1

Xoops has the best concept and implementation of all the CMS's out there. But I find it painful to come here anymore. The environment is acidic and is destroying everyone -- devs, staff and users.

Please, stop the petty politics and return to doing what you all do best -- making the most user-friendly, admin-friendly, intuitive, powerful CMS available anywhere.

I just wanted to say thank you everyone for the productive discussion in this thread. THIS is the XOOPS info I love to read -- intelligent and inquisitive. I've learned a lot by reading the back-and-forth. Security issues are way over my head so I'm glad that smart people are thinking about it and helping to make the sites of us regular users safer.

Sorry to go off topic. Now back to your regular discussion.... :)

I don't envy the choices phppp will need to make. Building a functional team that can work together and respect one another can be challenging.

IMNSHO, the XOOPS team members need skills AND positive personalities. We need people that believe in Xoops.

Remarkably good presentation. Thank you.

Lots of common sense things that while obvious are often overlooked.
