If you are designing websites for a living, for the sake of your sanity I would draw some boundaries. I test sites in Netscape 6.2 and 7, IE 5.5 and 6 and Firefox, on both Mac and PC, plus Safari on the Mac, plus Lynx. Every year or two I drop an obsolete browser version from the list. We tell our clients this.
If the client insists that their site works perfectly on AOL, Opera, a cellphone, Netscape 3 or Web TV we'll do it... but at extra cost!
nor do I know why the "Our goal is.." won't display correctly.

It was your comment about feeling 'lost' in the community. I agree roadmap is a great idea as long as users as well as developers can understand it.
