NewBB2 allows subcategories exactly as you are describing. It will be entering beta 4 status soon. Keep an eye out here for the release date.

At least two modules now use this extension -- freecontent and digest.
I've googled the web, searched the XOOPS forums, checked, double-checked and quadruple checked path settings, made sure dll's are in the system32 directory, made sure the php.ini has the extension directory set and the extention unremarked.
However, I always get the "unknown(): Unable to load dynamic library" dialogue box on reboot.
This is driving me crazy. It can't be that difficult, can it? Could someone please give a step-by-step install or at least some hints as to how they got this to work?

I'm not sure what you're asking here. Fan-sites? CMS-based sites? CMS-like sites?
Slashdot I'm willing to bet has no problem beating those numbers. Bluesnews, Anandtech, Ars, Sourceforge all get a bazillion hits.
Some sites are sub-sites to a much larger network that all have something in common. There are of course the Warcry sites, Gamespy or the Vault network which each have a bazillion people on them all the time, all of which have computer games as their commonality for the sub-sites.

I'm not sure the reason for deleting avatars when you change, but I'd like to keep all avatars from being deleted. Is that doable?

I used the Tiny Content module myself.

I made the html pages then used that module to format them in the XOOPS fashion. What was really nice is that I could use the XOOPS css which helped keep things consistent.
There are several other modules that can "wrap" html or php pages into Xoops. I tried the new Tiny Content first and was extremely pleased with it so I haven't looked further.

I know it's not required but to me it seems poor taste to not note that the code for the page is Xoops. Even if just stated in the meta headers. Afterall, you list all your other resources....
Also the theme is by 7Dana, not SevenDays methinks....

There will be a feature similiar to this in the next NewBB upgrade. They use a "karma" setting which will only allow those with a karma of xxxxx or above to read the post/response as set by the poster.
I haven't looked into how karma is set on users.
