Re: data base help!

If I can further decypher your request, you have your own server hosting site but don't know the database details? Or just need to know the table and field names where the user details are?

The table with the passwords is <your prefix>_users (xoops_users ?) and the user password field is "pass". The user id field is "uid", the name field is "uname". Pretty basic stuff.

The other details should already be known if you've installed xoops.

I myself wouldn't use a Fantistico install but if you don't have a clue it is the easy way. You can then use the db admin tool (phpMyadmin?) app on your control panel (cPanel?) to look into the database for more details. Normally you don't need to know the nitty gritty.

Oi.

Let me give my also unqualified response.. I think Dave_L is right. You can customize your own site to do anything you'd like and not be forced to give your secrets to Tom, Dick or Harry. Doesn't matter if the site is on the internet or locked down to a secret cave somewhere.

You can go behind closed doors and develop and sell your own applications. How you use the free software is the only question. You can't modify someone else's work and claim it as your own to make money. Nearly all of the commercial applications are using some mix of Open Source software behind it.

Turn it around, the OS community won't be friendly toward freely helping to develop software that they can't freely use themselves. Charge $5.00 or $1,998.75 for your own creation that happens to run on top of OS apps like xoops, PHP, mySQL, Apache, etc.

Re: data base help!

What part of the install are you having trouble with? It is impossible for others to know the exact details to type in but many of the defaults will work. It wouldn't be very secure if other people could guess the details.

It might help us a little to know what you are running this on. Is it a hosted server or one of your own? What OS, webserver version, PHP version, MySQL version and location, XOOPS version, etc.

Basically you will need to know the physical path of where you installed the files (detected defaults usually work here), your database name (you need to create the database if the hosting provider didn't provide you with one already), and the database login info.

Re: Moving forum threads?

Oh, I get it now.

I don't think that would be easily done. Considering all the cross table linking required to keep the posts in the right thread it would be difficult. Easy enough to copy a post to a news item (with poster info intact) so technically it is possible but I haven't looked at doing it.

In the Topic drop down list there is a Move This Topic function. You can move it to any other forum.

Re: no Mail delivery method options in 2.10

Maybe a dumb question but did you Update the System module (not just the templates)? If you didn't you'll need to do that and then regenerate the templates again.

You'll want to make sure that All the upgrade files actually over wrote the old files. Notifications are one thing that won't work until the upgrade and templates are updated so it would make sense that email wouldn't work right either.

Re: no Mail delivery method options in 2.10

I had to do a double take, there is another company in Toronto named Scalar and thought perhaps they had taken my advice to use xoops... Similar companies and names. (need any help/employees?)

Anyway, are you using a custom template? You'll want to delete and update the templates in the System module. You can look at the upgrade files to see which templates have been changed or just do them all. Of course you'll want to make a backup so any custom edits are put back in.

Re: pngbehavior.htc and _403 forbidden errors

bumping this up.

I don't understand why I'm seeing the 403 forbidden errors for some of the newbb2 related items. It only seems to happen some times. I haven't heard of many complaints from my users but the messages are strange.

Re: simple hack (4 years in the works) paypal subscription

When I read the GNU and compare it to even half of nearly any commercial license I choose GNU. It isn't just about the money.

Anyone if Free to charge Money for code that by license must be allowed to then be free if one chooses. If you're good enough and lucky enough to get your 1,000s of dollars back by selling code that others later get for free then all should be good. If selling code is the only means to riches then GNU is not the right direction. Many companies survive quite well since the free code is their loss leader to other business.

There is also a community aspect to this kind of software that many will never understand. I don't get as excited about participating in a community for commercial products. So all is fair.

The politics and public bickering within Open Source projects is never ending but no less volatile than what goes on behind closed doors of commercial projects. Keeping it behind closed doors is a lot more expensive. I'm more bothered by paying for products that has more investment in the marketing, secrecy, hype, and restrictions than in the code itself.

The Open Source community is doing well and my computer is much healthier running it for years now.

There is all manner of commercial CMS products out there. My heart isn't into researching who and what they are but for a price I could do the leg work.... Otherwise why do people that don't like the structure insist on bitching about it? Don't use it. Don't try to change it. There are many many products that I don't like or don't like the license, so I stay away from them.
