I am trying to upgrade XOOPS from XOOPS 1.3 to 2.3.3, and in the process am trying to get the forum module upgraded as well.

So far I have been successful in going from XOOPS 1.3, to 2.013.2

At that point I can upgrade newbb 1.0 to 2.02. To do this I run the database upgrade script that comes with the 2.02 download, and then update from within the administrative section.

After that I seem to be able to upgrade XOOPS 2.0.13.2 to 2.3.3 with the upgrade package that comes with 2.3.3

at that point I swapped out the /newbb directory (2.02) with the cbb 3.08 /newbb directory, crossed my fingers, and updated from within the admin area in xoops. This works somewhat but if I go to the forum index on the site, I see nothing other than the post stats for the site and some options on the right. No catagories or forums. I can search for posts, and from there can find posts, and get to catagory indexes, but see nothing at first. I have opened permissions wide open and still nothing.

I haven't seen anything about upgrade scripts or methods for going from newbb 2.02 to cbb 3.08 or anything about making a jump, or describing (maybe they are the same thing) newbb vs. cbb and the differences in versions.

can someone explain how newbb and cbb are related and how one should go about going from newbb 1.0 that came with the original versions of XOOPS to the latest and greatest stable version? Maybe I am missing something that I need to do for cbb to work properly?

I have spent a good 10 hours or more looking for information on upgrading and have found very little, mostly what I've figured out has been trial and error. Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks! that definitely helps with the upgrade path, I tried that and it seems to work pretty well.

I am still curious about the group modification though. I'm wondering if it is a flag/switch somewhere at this point because the 'find people to add to this group' method works pretty well, and I can live with that, I just wonder why it happens on my upgrade route but if I install a clean fresh xoops, it's the move from one list to another method.

If I do a fully fresh install of 2.0.13, and go to administration->groups and modify a group, I have 2 windows at the bottom, one with people not in the group, and 1 with people in the group. I can move people back and forth between these two lists.

This is exactly how group administration worked in 1.3

If I do the upgrade (start fresh with 2.0.13 files and the old database) I get a list at the bottom that only lets me delete users, or 'find users to add'.

Is this how it is supposed to be? Is there a way to make it work like the old way/fresh install way?

Also, I am starting out with 1.0 RC3.0.5. Should I do some other upgrade before the 2.0.13.2 to get this to work (like 1.3.9 or 1.3.10)? What version is RC 3.0.5 the release candidate for?

And while I'm asking old questions (I've searched and looked here, I swear!) what path should I take to get from 2.0.13.2 on up to 2.3.3?

I remembered seeing another thread on memory usage and no email configuration page. I looked at that and someone mentioned upping the memory limit in the php.ini file. I went through several steps until I got success at 64mb.

when loading it pauses for a second at the spot where it displays the drop down list of users to send mail from. I expect in populating that list, if you have a large user base (I have around 600 I think), it may chew up a bunch of memory to do so.

I had this issue, I ended up going up to 64mb in the php.ini file before it would work. I expect the problem is that it loads every user in the drop down so that you can select who the mail will be 'from'. With a large user base, this could eat up a decent chunk of memory.

didn't have php error messages turned on in php.ini.

the error I get trying to go to the mail settings now is:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 47 bytes) in /home/wlsite/htdocs/kernel/object.php on line 175

P.S. I have stripped the old site of most modules to try and make this as easy as possible. Currently I still have 'quotes' and 'whosonline' but those could be removed.

The only thing I really need to retain through the upgrades is the forum and user tables. I don't want to loose 6+ years of posts and all the many user registrations.

I have been working on trying to get an upgrade going on a guild website that has been around for quite some time. We originally set this up with XOOPS v1.0 rc 3.0.5 (www.winterslegacy.com).

There have been several times in the past few years that I have started looking at upgrading this and every time I do I end up getting fed up and dropping the project. This time I have made it quite a bit further than any other attempt however I am running into a few issues that I hope someone can give some advice to.

First, I run my own server so I have the luxury of being able to create test databases/accounts/etc. on the fly.

currently working with:
mysql 4.0.20
php 4.3.7
apache 1.3.31

The oldest version of XOOPS I see available is 2.0.13. My first question is, is that the version I want to try to jump to or is there an earlier version I should try and find. Someone mentioned in a post I had made about a year ago that I might want to go to 2.0.0 however I don't see that version anywhere.

Right now the best I have been able to do, is take my current XOOPS database, duplicate it, and do an install of 2.0.13 pointing to it. Everything seems to go ok on the install, and for the most part it works however I have 1 major issue and 1 minor one.

big issue: If I go to preferences and email setup, I get a solid white/blank page. I have turned on the different trouble shooting modes and none of them gives me anything.

I get this with a clean/fresh load of my current site's database and a clean/fresh load of the XOOPS files. I could have sworn when I first started playing with this that it didn't do this (being able to send email through an authenticated smtp server is probably the highest reason for me wanting to upgrade) however every configuration I try does this now. If I start with a fresh 0 data, database it works.

I have done a bit of sql digging, and it may be that I could ignore this and directly change the configuration data I need in sql, but it would be nice to figure out why this isn't working.

One thought I have had is that maybe it is a problem with webmaster permissions? Since when I install using a pre-existing database there may be something with the old webmaster account?

I have had very little luck looking for information on upgrading a version this old.

second issue: user permissions (primarily group).

group permissions seem to break.. kind of. I see that newbb 1.0 is still packaged with 2.0.13, however the ability to deal with forum access by group seems to have gone away?

I am unable to add/remove site members from groups by going to the group modification administration area. There is a box at the bottom with a list of current people in a group, and a way to delete them, but no method to add them.

If I do a fresh install of XOOPS with a blank database, I am able to add and remove people in this area as I was able to do with the older version.

All in all, any information anyone has on upgrading this older version to more current versions would be greatly appreciated.

Any suggestion on version jumps past 2.0.13 if I can get these issues fixed?

ever find a solution to this? I have been working on upgrading my OLD XOOPS site (1.13) and the first step has been going to 2.0.13. When I first started playing with this the email setup page was working fine, but I've been doing a lot of different trial and error stuff trying to get other things working. then I started noticing that email setup (one of the big things for me for upgrading, email wouldn't work on the last installation due to ISP port blocking etc.) stopped working. Even if I reload the database and start with fresh XOOPS files, I'm getting the same thing. Any ideas?

Made this post some time ago and got sidetracked and never really looked into it anymore. I assume this info is still valid though it looks like XOOPS has evolved a bit more.

as far as the forum module goes, the info I have on it follows. It's done well for the past 7-8 years? But it sure would be nice to have something where search worked well and wasn't so... buggy? This is the biggest issue I have with upgrading the site, I really don't want to loose all these posts as they are the main thing the site is used for. Any further suggestions would be much appreciated :)
