Although i love XOOPS in general I find the mylinks module way too cumbersome for a large link directory project.
Does anyone have any other ideas about how to manage links more effectively and in a more easily navigated way.

Currently on my main website Anni's Aussi Links I am using wf sections 1.01 to manage my links. I have another website where I have installed wf-sections beta 2.07 and have been playing with this.

I have posted on the wf-projests website here my ideas for what I want to do.

If anyone knows how to make a mod that will do this or knows of some other mod or script that can be used please let me know.
To maintain friendliness for search engines it is very important to me that the actual url appears in the first level of query so that there are no redirects involved such as in mylinks. What I mean by this is that when you navigate to a description of a link in mylinks and hover above the link name it does not show the actual url address of the site it shows the id of the link in the database which then redirects the browser to the url.

Hope this is not too much for someone to help with.
Thanks in advance.

I use site meter which is free. They supply the html code you need to run it. All I did was install it in a custom block and it seems to work fine. And their stats are pretty good too.

I have been reading a fair bit about search engines in the last week or two and there are two key points that I have noticed.
1. Search engines are not real keen on dynamic pages and neither are reciprocal linkers. With a new site the bots do not deep crawl your site at first and it may take many months for this to occur.
2. Since only 13% of the hits to most web pages come from searches it is far more important to get you url "out there" in other ways such as finding community sites where you can list you url.
The whole focus of my website is as a web directory and many of the so called "quality" sites won't give me a reciprocal link because of their link being a database reference. Ad I add someones link to my directory I always send them an email or through their contact form on their site to let them know I have added their link. Many of them return the favour but some won't I don't let this faze me at all.

Sounds like you are getting themes and templates confused. I did at first too. The templates are uploaded through your system admin in xoop as tar.gz files. Themes must be uploaded via ftp to the themes folder on your server. And you need to make sure that you upload from the correct folder. Sometimes the actual them folder might be 2 or even three levels deep in the unzipped file that you download from here. Most of the probs we newbies have are easily answered and the support her in the forums is brilliant. You just need to leave your frustration behind and be polite and you will get all the info you need. I have asked many very basic questions all of which have been answered quickly, graciously and willingly by fellow xoopers. Failing that search this site for your answers and there is a fantastic XOOPS for dummies here. Hope this helps.

Quote:
The renaming might be because of the rights grants and the choice of storing those images in the database

The renaming occurs whether you choose to store the images in the database as 'blobs' or whether you upload them as a file in the uploads folder.
I don't use image manager much for this reason as well. All of my images get renamed to things like img4152c63600022.jpg which means that I have to have the option to display images selected.
Can the images be renamed back to their original file name in my cpanel file manager (counterproductive also I know) or is there some other way of doing it without them being renamed. I have taken to uploading my images to the images folder(as opposed to the uploads folder) via ftp or the upload file option in my cpanel.
Hope someone can shed some light on this issue because it seems a shame to waste a tool that could be so useful without these issues. Thanks.

Have you tried viewing the html in your file manager on your server and checking that the code is the same.

I can't remember where I saw it but there are avatar packs available and also a module for mass upload of avatars/smileys. Google 'avatars for xoops' and you might find something. Also google '3500 avatars'.
To find where to put them cos I'm not sure, go into your profile and upload an avatar then look for it in your file manager.

I have started using wfsections to list my links and would like some feedback please before i go too much further with the relisting process. Please start with the All Creatures Great and Small link as I have only put a few in to see how it works. I have not added any images yet, but if the feedback I get is positive I will put category images and either screenshots or buttons from the websites I list. I am trying to make the links more search engine friendly which is why I have done it this way. Please tell me it you think it easier to navigate the links by using wfsections the way I have set it up or if the old mylinks module is easier to use. Post feedback here or in my Whats the big idea forum please. Also if anyone knows if this makes the links easier for bots please let me know.

thank you to anyone who helps with this. I do appreciate it. The more feedback I get The better, even just a simple yes if you think its workable or no if you don't.
