Catzwolf joining the XOOPS Development Team

We are very happy to announce that Catzwolf is officially joining the XOOPS Development Team.

He is a brilliant developer, author of countless XOOPS modules, and we are extremely happy to have him back with us.

Please extend a warm "welcome back" to John.

With this we would like to officially extend an invitation to all past, non-active XOOPS developers to come back and join us on the journey of making XOOPS the best CMS in the world. We are sure that while away you've learned a lot of new things and programming tricks, from which XOOPS could benefit. We've had couple of rough years, but we believe that we are now on track to something really awesome, and we would like you to be part of it.

There will be more exciting things coming....

dev.xoops.org is open for developers

We are pleased to announce that our development site,http://dev.xoops.org is open for business.

As most of you know, it was damaged by malicious hackers last year, and it took us some time to repair it. We believe, it's now working, but if you find any problems, please let us know.

We would like to thank all the people who supported us in the transition, installation, and testing of the dev.xoops.org site.

And to all of XOOPS users and supporters - we very much appreciate your patience, while we were working on that.

We are working hard on getting XOOPS where it should be, and going live with dev.xoops.org is only one of many things that we are working on. Let's just review some of the recent activities:

- several updates to Core
- XOOPS 2.3 Alpha 3 will be released VERY SOON
- WOX (World of XOOPS) newsletter reactivated
- XOOPSer of the Month Award reactivated
- International Support Team has been formed
- there are a lot of activities there, with several new Support Sites being formed and active
- we have new promotional items, incl. wallpapapers, flash banners, and screensavers
- module repository is being refreshed and will contain all available modules for XOOPS 2. Going live very soon.
- Modules Team coming soon
- we are focusing on spreading "good news" about XOOPS, about Awards and recognitions

There will be more good news coming soon, and we hope that together we'll look for ways what we all as a community and each and every one of us individually can contribute to XOOPS to make it the best CMS it can be.

Once again, your patience, your support, and your positive contributions, are very much appreciated!

The XOOPS Team

Calling for XOOPS Developers

Dear XOOPS Developers,

there are some exciting news coming up, and we'll need your help!!!

1)http://dev.xoops.org has been reinstalled, and before we go live with it, we need some of the XOOPS developers who have been using it before and have their modules there, to test it. If you would like to help us with the tests, it, please contact us

2) Module developers are encouraged to use XOOPS SVN for their code so that developers can share their ideas and help each other easily. It will also be a centralized place convenient for users to check module updates. A new subdirectory for XOOPS modules has been set up:

http://xoops.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/xoops/XoopsModules/

Please read the Readme.txt file there, with some links to information about how to use SVN and TortoiseSVN.

Going forward, we want to leverage more the expertise of our community and focus on code reuse, so keeping the code together will help us to achieve that.

3) And now the most important thing: Starting a XOOPS Module Team.

We need help with getting existing XOOPS modules up to speed for the upcoming releases 2.3 and 3.0

Therefore we're calling for all XOOPS Developers to join us in this effort. Some of the task that we have are:

Phase 1:

* populate our module repository with all available XOOPS modules, and update them to their latest release

* select modules that should be part of our Module Packs (e.g. Basic, Commerce, Web, Community). The Basic Pack will be included in the main distribution of XOOPS, so the user will have first class "out of box" experience

* After the selection of modules, we will ensure that all modules of the individual packs are updated for PHP5, and there are on conflicts between them

* Also ensure that all of them are updated with latest Security patches

Phase 2:

* Rewrite the XOOPS modules following XOOPS 3 structure, i.e. using XOOPS_PATH for code libraries (For sharing purposes, or for security consideration like D3 modules) and XOOPS_DATA_PATH for data, which are designed in XOOPS 3 but have been introduced into XOOPS 2.3. Meanwhile XOOPS_TRUST_PATH has been introduced into XOOPS 2.3 as alias for XOOPS_PATH to keep compatibility for a certain number of modules, e.g. D3 series. More information will follow...

* Extract common code and create a XOOPS Module Framework, so we can make the module development easier, and the modules themselves lighter.

We'll have a lot of exciting things coming up, but we need your help.

Please contact us if you would like to join the team and help.

Remember, XOOPS is powered by YOU!!!!

Xoops Top Sites, Submit Your Xoops Site

Hey everyone at Xoops.org,

Ive created a top sites site forsites Made with xoops. I thought it would be a cool idea to have everyones xoops site in one directory, but be able to vote for each site. The site is finished feature wise, but its actual look and buttons aren't the final design. But any way i hope that everyone will submit there site and we will see what happens. Also im going to turn the top sites script into a xoops module.

Xoops Mod Dev is alive and kicking

Following D.J's (phppp) decision to blank module development, a new site, xoopsmoddev.org has been born. All module developers are invited to join the site.

What's it about?

Simple really: Its a home for module developers to manage their work. It's new, the PM side of things is still being developed but in the meantime, mod devs are invited to join and give their views on how the site and organisation should be run.

XoopsModDev.org is a 'not for profit' community initiative

The results for this questionnaire are out. (See here for the original article, where you can still add your voice.)

In brief, some 70% or respondents are currently using PHP5 with the rest expecting to o over to it in the next 12 months. Only 40% of respondents are using MySQL5 and most of the others don't expect to upgrade for another 12 months.

Questionnaire regarding Supporting PHP5 and MySQL5

Following Mithrandir's release of the excellent SmartProfile module for Xoops 2.0.16, the question of which version of PHP (and to some extent MySQL) should we as Xoops devs (both core and module) be supporting, has arisen.

To help in determining who is running what and where, and more importantly who will be running what in the future, I've put together a very simple and quick questionnaire at Xoobs.net. Please help us to gather some important information about your PHP and MySQL usage by completing THE QUESTIONNAIRE.

You will need to enquire of your hosters first, if you don't already know the answer.

Data collected here will be passed back to Xoops.org to help developers plan their strategies.
