GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

We have been with the host www.godaddy.com for 2 months now. The first month was the design phase and then the second was going live. Once we went live, we had nothing but server resets, error 500 and tremendous lag time. After numerous tickets with GoDaddy, they pretty much stated that this is all they can provide with their economy support which is the basic hosting supplied by them. Our site is a non profit organization with very few connections at a given time. Even with no users connect, lag was bad or the errors were expected. So a waste of my time and off to find another host that can support my site properly. I strongly suggest to stay away from GoDaddy.com!

I would like to know of any USA based webhosts that are recommended by our XOOPS user community. We are running on all the lastest of technologies (XOOPS 2.5.1a, PGP5, etc).

Let me know your suggestions!

Thanks,

Mike

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

HostGator.com is the best of the ones I have tried.
I'm an affiliate, so if ya wanna share the love, ask and I'll give my affiliate ID, but it is an incredible deal even if I don't make anything on it.:
c-Panel utilities
Unlimited storage
Unlimited bandwidth
Full access to php.ini and cron functions
GREAT online & telephone support
Superb uptime history
Very good security

There's a deal right now for 1 penny for the first month.
The more I know, the more I know that I really didn't wanna know.

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

I'd recommend 1and1.com. They've been around for a long time, consistently rated at the top, and I've had no noticable issues since using them for the past 3+ yrs. for both their Windows and Linux servers. Their rates are very good too...

I believe xoops.org is hosted by SurpassHosting.com - out of Florida, although I've had 'spotty' results. They're pretty good at communications when you do have an issue...

ps. I gain no financial benefit from 1and1.com for recommending them - this is just a personal recommendation... Thanks Dante7237 for mentioning your affiliation, I see no reason you shouldn't get the love if Mike uses your recommendation above...

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

I believe that GoDaddy can't deal with your site; I worked with a client that used them - initially at least, until I convinced them to move. IMHO 1and1 sucks/. And neither site's support staff can deal with anything non-standard (by their standards). I remember trying to get 1and1 to use DNS elsewhere for a client that needed to distribute their services on different machines and services. At that time, if DNS didn't point to their DNS servers, you couldn't use them. What if you want to use your own DNS servers, or another providers for some reason (potentially to have more control, distribution, etc.). Anyhoos. I've heard good things about HostGator, too, among a few others. Web Hosting Talk is a good place to find this type of info.

FWIW, our little company does web-hosting, and we host quite a few XOOPS sites. Full Disclosure: I do gain financial compensation from anyone that uses our services. 30-day free trial for new accounts.

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

Hmmm... Interesting experience with 1and1.com. Was this recently Mark? 1and1.com does provide ways to externally manage DNS (http://faq.1and1.com/domains/domain_admin/dns_settings/index.html) - which is what I do. I don't use their DNS servers and setup my own CNAME, MX, etc. and haven't had any issues. Maybe I'm not doing anything as complex as you were attempting though. Most of my customers are small businesses that just want reliable, no frills webhosting.

I agree that virtually none of the shared hosting support guys handle "special requests" very well, but that's usually what you get for the low cost...

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

Mamba,

You on dedicated server there which we cant afford that budget being such a closed non profit organization. Would shared hosting be ok from surpasshosting in your opinion?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

Since we as XOOPS had such a good experience with www.Surpasshosting.com, I moved my VPS to them as well, and have also a very good experience. The best thing is that it is a "managed VPS", i.e. they will help you if you have problems. Highly recommended.

I'd say so anyway, but it's actually a requirement now that affiliates ID themselves when giving testimonials about their services..

Re: GoDaddy.com and XOOPS!

Our organization is a non profit group with minimal traffic since its a closed site. When we were using XOOPS 2.3.x prior to this move to godaddy.com, everything was running great when the database was stable. We moved due to lack of support. My question is will the new XOOPS 2.5.1a run efficiently on a shared hosting environment? I really dont want to move the site again to find the same results after all the hard work in migrating it all.

Thanks to all who respond,

Mike
