I want background images in one of my themes.
The images are now about 60 Kb, quite big. I noticed that existing images are around 6 Kb or so.

What is the best way to make the image size (kbytes) smaller and still have a picture that is acceptable?

I dont think that 60 KB is to big for a background image, i have a background pictures from 100 kb nog problems here. To answer your question you can change the size of your image or you can make it it a little less sharper!

Check the resolution of your image and use .jpg format.
Use a resolution of 72 for your graphics. This can decrease the file size by quite a bit and be great for the web. You can use .gif also.

If its a photo/jpeg, you can experiment with applying greater levels of compression. You'll need an image editing program. If you are lucky enough to have a recent version of Photoshop, it has a great 'save for web' features that lets you compare file size/appearance of a photograph under different levels of compression.

If its a GIF or PNG you're dealing with, you can experiment with reducing the number of colours/bit depth in an image (again, you'll need an image editor). Usually you can dump quite a few before the image starts to deteriorate.

You can get huge savings in file size if you're prepared to play around a bit.
