I'm not sure but is the 'USERNAME' system dependant?
What I mean is on some sites a user can only use 8 characters in a name, on some 10. Seeems to me if RedHat or SuSE is used you can only use 8 characters, whereas with Mandrake 10.

If this is so, it would be (my personal opinion) better if this is integrated into XOOPS. This would make XOOPS more uniform.

Its just a thought, not important though.

Minimum username (and password) lenghts are set in XOOPS System Admin

As you can see, integration in XOOPS didn't make things more uniform

I know that the min. length can be set in the admin. What I ment was that, i.e. I use the username hyperclock but on this site (and a few other sites using xoops) only allow up to 8 letters - so instead of using hyperclock I can only use hyperclo.

This was what I got when using SuSE or Red Hat. So actually this brings me to think that XOOPS uses the password system of the OS it resides on, which in return makes me think it would be more conform if this would be integrated into XOOPS.

Thats all....not that hard to understand is it?

I'm fairly sure the XOOPS password system is OS independent.

I believe you can set the Min. and Max. length. (I think) I can say at my site, the length is at least 16.

Of course the user password is OS independent. If you take a look at the xoops_users table you'll see there a field pass defined as varchar(32). So the default is a maximum of 32 characters but you can, of course, change this value in the database and have as many characters as you may need. And the minimum is controlled from the admin interface.

Cheers.

the theory of the minimum can also be shot down by the fact that you have hyperclo (8 letters) and we have sunsnapper here, too (10 letters)
