Adding Text to Footer

I'd like to change and add some lines of code to the footer.

I tried doing through the footer.php file, but it didn't work.

I tried through the theme.html, but it didn't do the trick either. THis is probably a quick and easy, but it escapes me.

Admin menu/settings/meta tags and footer
Change and Go
That should do it
