Thanks for the great work Burning.

Is there anyway, you can share the current list. I am trying to upgrade my site from xoops 2.3.1 to 2.4.4. if possible, I would like to update the modules at the same time as some of the module version may not work after upgrade.

thanks in advance.

hi'

I have to make a little pause.

Ressources prepared :
• zip for all modules (727) : XOOPS2_mod_module-folder-name_version_author
• logos for modules (if needed) : png format, orange for old modules / blue for modules >= Xoops 2.3.x

Columns filled in ods file :
1 • Module name
2 • Zip name
3 • Release date
4 • Compatibility
5 • Author name
6 • Module version
7 • Module folder name
8 • Download link
9 • Logo module original
10 • Logo module alternative (if needed)
11 • Profile developer url on xoops.org

Columns that remain to do :
12 • Category id
13 • Module description

About Module description page, any ideas ?

For moment :
• short description (= module usage)
• main features (= complete description)
• blocks available
• language available
• installation notes
• changelog

@deepak267 : ods file is not for share / for a personal use. If you need help, just open a new topic, I would be pleased to help if I can.

hi' noo-b

Thanks for response :)

--- Demos

Demo would be an excellent help for new users. However there are some difficulties :
• a demosite requires regular updates (core & modules)
• one user can't do this work alone
• to be consistent, we should make demosite with modules included in Xoops packs

... in my opinion, it is an excellent idea, but are we ready to make it now ?

I believe we have to procede like this :
• 1st step : clean modules repository
• 2nd step : create Xoops packs
• 3rd step : if we can, make demosites

--- Commercial modules / license

Why don't we create a category for commercial modules ? It will be more clear for all users ?

--- Author website

That's an (other) excellent idea. I will create a new column for author website : I don't know if it will be used for modules repository but, not so difficult to do...

Thanks again :)

Author website? maybe not the right word. GPL means you get a lot of modules based on other modules, which were in turn based on the original module.

Updated and supported by... would be better IMHO. This would give appropriate credit to the developer for new features and still show respect to the original module creator.

Commercial modules category - yes, absolutely. If you pay for a module the developer must provide support, not XO community. This should be made clear in the repository.

If no active support site is available, I would not allow commercial modules to be sold in the repository. Same for paid themes IMHO.
A thread is for life. Not just for Christmas.

I have no object to creator, even if you provide only eg a SEO hack for an existing module, you are the creator of that hack.
The description can make this clear, that it concerns of a modification / clone of an existing module.
In the copyright and version info, of course the real creator of the module should stay listed and acknowledged.

hi'

Back to work :)

Thanks for your advices... however about developer name, it will be errors. 0 error will not be possible, because
• information is lacking
• or xoops_version.php file gives false information
• or I make a mistake...

---

now I'm trying to order modules into categories. There are many questions :
• how to make module repository easy to use for visitors
• how to make it easy to update for admins

I think the current directory module is quite old and has enough "experience". We could make a review and try to avoid the pitfalls that make it now quite unusable.

Two points :
1 • module repository is old and many administrators supported its maintenance, with more or less care (this is not a criticism but an observation of a situation that has slowly degraded)
2 • about the organization of repository, we should question the relevance of certain categories or subcategories. Too many categories, too many sub-categories ? Not enough ? Bad titles ?

... put here some "statistics", extracted from repository (duplicated modules are not counted, and we have to add more than 280 missing modules)

My personal observations :
- a lot of modules are in a main category, it makes non sense
- some categories seems to be filled because admins didn't know where to put the module (Miscellaneous category has 53 items, it does not help users). Other are almost empty
- some categories are duplicated (Misc = Other for example) or their titles are too close (Game / Gaming... but may be my bad english ?)
- there is no category for Frameworks, Smarty plugins, hacks, graphic ressources ... all mixed with modules :(

Some advices / observations would be welcome :)

Nothing wrong with this catalog ?!
(I can't believe it )

... let me know if you think that a category has to be removed, moved or created. I saw on two major CMS module repository :
• Joomla is really simple, too simple if I can
• Drupal is very very good, but maybe too difficult for a newbie

... I strongly believe Xoops can do something very attactive with his repository. But we have to think about a solid organization of the categories :)

---

About module description, I have made a simple html page. We could make it without developments (if we use TDMDownloads at least).

> download link if you want to modify / complete

> something very similar is already in place on frxoops.org

... let me know if this kind of page would be ok for Xoops.org ?
