See attached design.
I thinks XOOPS can achieve this. But I have not thought it through.

Very interesting indeed!

Are you thinking to use the 960 Grid System that you talk about here?

Indeed, 960 GS will be applied. But 960 is just a CSS framework, it cannot do everything. And how to integrate the homepage layout with the content is of vital importance. I think I can achieve this by using "Blocks Anywhere" modules or hacks. But I can not think of a way that can avoid the customization when applying the theme.

I am waiting for a day when XOOPS user can adjust the theme visually the same way as it is possible now with SourceForge, i.e. I can move around the blocks visually, to make it look the way I want it.

It's a very powerful concept, and very user-friendly!

while the flexibility is important. Code efficiency is another important concern.

Yes, XOOPS can do the layout you have put there. You will have to build your own theme, but you can use XOOPS for ANY site you want. With a theme framework like Morphogenesis (or the others) coupled with the Blocks Anywhere (2 versions out there, each with its own strengths), you get a highly customizable setup. I also started using jQuery extensively about 1 year ago on my sites which adds another level of interactivity. What we don't have yet is the ability to have users move blocks around on the screen ala a Google home page or such. Would be nice, but that is another layout framework, requiring j-script, and AJAX is another aspect that would be a positive integration. The philosophy of XOOPS has been to have a bare-bones, standards compliant system and then allow the developer to put whatever front end they want on it (allowing j-script or not as needed and desired for their users). I think most developers make their own frontend theme framework based on others and then merge them with each particular design.
