I wonder, what you make say this? Are there examples to support your view of the evolution?

BTW: The free in free software is the free from freedom and free speech, but not the free of gratis as in free beer! Making money is not forbidden by the GPL, it is even encouraged!

Take a look around I see that XOOPS has put up a paid mod section and that’s fine and now that that’s up more people are taking notice of that. If you look at some of the modules I found that the same ones that were free last week now they want money for. I don’t blame someone wanting to get paid for their work I just don’t want to see money destroy a good thing. And don’t ask me to call them out I wont

BTW The Open Source Definition
The Open Source Definition is used by the Open Source Initiative to determine whether or not a software license can be considered open source. The definition was based on the Debian Free Software Guidelines, written and adapted primarily by Bruce Perens

And the first rule is free redistribution.

4 out of 500... hardly a take over.

Which of those were ever free?

If you say A, you have to say B. If you don't want to support your statements, then they are simply unsupported opinions and have no value to me.

For the Open Source Definition, there are many of them. XOOPS is open source as specified by its GPL where redistrubution is also free but not an obligation. You are free to do it or not, to give it away or to ask money for it.
XOOPS has nothing to do with DFSG.

Ok maybe I stated the question wrong I never meant to imply that XOOPS was charging money but some of the people that contribute to XOOPS are after the new category was made I was surfing some sites that link from the downloads section of this site and it says free download and when you go to download I got a page asking for money ok from that persons site
And as far as my opinions meaning any thing to you I could care less

I think that much of the stuff that is available for "free" as in "gratis" (core, modules, themes, etc) is because of the fact that many of those who code for the community and give their time for the good of XOOPS more generally are professionals and earn their living coding.

Take as examples DJ (phppp, our lead dev) and the Instant Zero gang (Hervé, Marco, Phillou (I think!))..... coding and websites are their livelihoods, how they keep a roof over their heads and pay their bills. Is it so wrong for them to make people aware their professional services on here?

I don't personally think so and remember, too, that the code and modules they write as part of a paid-for service today will inevitably filter down into free-to-the-end-user modules and core code tomorrow.
