Yes to publish in home.
The mod is very similar to the old one i am using, altern8news, so I think I'm doing what's right. I'm gonna uninstall it and reinstall. Maybe something happened during the download via ftp?

or i can try this other news module?

XM-Spotlight and LatestNews Module are modules that create blocks that display items from the news module.

did enabling debugging show anything? and also are you using php5?

Not sure how to enable debug but will try that. I'm sorry for so much trouble. Maybe i should just keep using that old Altern8news and just not be able to edit items unless I copy and paste into a seperate editor then back again. Double work but I'm about out of luck here.

ok now what about.. in the topic manager (in the news module administration) and look for the 'Publish in front page ?' setting.

Thanks anyway for all the help. Maybe someday the creator of altern8news will create a newer version. Or not.

Please can you go to Modules Admin and find the News module in the list. Is there a value other than "0" in the "Order column?

If no, then set it to a positive number. If yes, then click on the "Update" icon to refresh the module.

If this doesn't work then upload the module again; the only other explanation is corrupt or missing file.
